Thanks Chris, NIB not sure who or what that is. A quick google brought up the 'Unusual World Coins' entry for the silver sets but no mention of the gold. An ebay entry also can up for a dealer selling a set for £499, I suspect they have been on their for a while and will stay a long time at that price. One snippet, he quoted 100 sets made of 0.999 gold at 8.71g so they must be worth a couple of hundren quid scrap. Not bad for my £69 outlay.

So where did the fantasy maundy sets come from, where they anything to do with these. at one time ebay was awash with them although I haven't looked recently. I have a set in gold that I've not been able to find out anything about.

I think the statement limited edition collectables or gifts says it all.

I guess one important factor is weight. If it's the same weight as a normal penny it is likely it has been squashed, although how you could squash it without leaving flattening I don't know.

As a jolly jape people would put a penny on a railway line to be run over by a train. The penny would come out larger but tended to elongate so I would assume this is not the mechinism used on this coin. It has been struck with the collar in place so I would tend towards post mint damage.

They take all of the jobs in the black economy so there's none for benifit claiments.

Does the man on the street actually know or care where the laws come from, isn't this just our MPs scrapping over who's in charge and won't accept they are no more than a regional assembly. I'd clear the lot of them out and make the MEP's electable. I assume all the MP's will be doing the right thing and resigning atfer the people have spoken when found to be on the wrong side. I can't imagine any of them have canvassed the opinion of their constituents before expressing their own opinions.

I'm suprised the 1909 is that rare. I've got one in about Fair but they do come up on ebay once in a while.

I also have a double reverse 1970 proof penny and I can't see the join even under a microscope.

Here it is in all it's glory. I was considdering having it finish by that chap in the US but for the cost it would likely be better to start again with a decent pair of coins. Plus copper doesn't work so well as silver. It's a shame about the different tone each side, that is something I would like to fix but don't wnat to wreck it completely as it's a good novelty item. To put the two halves together I put the inner one in the freezed for a little while to shrink it.

Nice coin, of the five types that one does appear to be found in the best condition.

At the time Peter made up the trays with a range of hole sizes so I've got the appropiate size hole to suit the coin. The smaller coins have a small hole underneath so that they can be lifted with something like a cocktail stick, saves using a screwdriver down the edge to lever then out. I also have mixed trays so that say where the pennies end the half pennies start, otherwise I'd need too many trays to fit the cabinet. I've taken the two medal tray out as it is and replaced them with coin trays. As my collection has changed I've also had new trays made to suit. I also asked Peter to make the stand at the same time. I think I paid £500 in all about 7-8 years ago.

Not being one to miss an opportunity. I have the trays custom made to fit the different denominations, including the maundy sets.

Them being no longer made by Peter Nichols may have also inflated the price. I'm sure they were a bargain when he knocked them up himself in his back shed.

Of course some unscrupulous individual could have removed the H and give the penny a good clean afterwards to hide there handywork.

If it wasn't said that it was wrist or ankle size I'd have gone for brass curtain ring.

I've got the 1916 recessed ear in UNC but the 1915 only in EF. clogged 15 the best I can do is Fine, the clooged 20 I can do better at VF.

I didn't realise the 2p could be found in the year set, I thought it was just a couple of the advertising sets.
