    Many thanks for all your comments - especially for that link Josie as the operations bit actually explains how it works! I can't help thinking that a pencil and paper calculation would be so much easier though!

    Just for the record, I always prefer engraved coins that show the original coin too, with the exception of 18th Cent coppers which are usually smoothed both sides.

    Yes I agree, the prices have been on the up..... even so that crown is rather more than I would expect! I would question the engraving - the engraving looks a little too stylised and unlikely to be contemporary IMO. The coin seems to be a crown Peck as there is a photo of the reverse. There are some love tokens that have been engraved on non genuine coins.

    Thanks for your inputs guys. No markings or writing on it at all Peter, which leads me to think it had some sort of industrial use - like the idea of counting in something Colin.. Intrigued to know how it was used still though and why the numbers are 4/5 5/4 6/3 7/2 etc.... especially if it does calculate something!

    Each "cog" will rotate independently, but only dowmwards in the one direction. The numbers then appear in the above boxes in succession from 0- 9. The handle appears to move all the cogs that have been moved in the first place. It also resets them all to 0. Do you think it could be an early counting machine?

    Morning chaps. I wondered if any of you can help me with this? It's not a coin but could be money related? My other half likes collecting engineering objects which have obscure uses, but we have no idea what this could be. It's aprox 11cm wide, 14cm long and 11 cm at its highest point made from some sort of galvanized metal. maybe 1930's? Thanks for looking!

    Wasn't one of those someone's avatar? I think your best bet is the bay. I have several all from there - none I would want to get rid of though I am afraid. They go for about £25-£40.

    Sorry to hear about your parents - it must be quite a shock . I don't think that for one minute that you would be "booted out" we all like looking at whatever coins you may have and who knows they may well be of interest to someone on here (have you got any that have been engraved?!).Why not post up some pictures of your late fathers most treasured coins?
