  1. Where's the king ?? 'Round the back!
  2. I think this is just about the best piece of advice offered, unless you truly do have endless funds to purchase coins!I wonder how much pleasure there would be in it all if the penny pinch didn't hurt just a tiny little bit? I compare it to buying a classic car on a budget, and struggling to finance the restoration on weekends and evenings! Who would enjoy his classic the most, the man who finally drives his little Triumph GT6 out of the garage for a test drive, or the wealthy merchant or pop star who walks into a London classic car showroom, points, and says 'that one'? Never having quite enough isn't always such a bad thing in the pleasure stakes, there's definitely a relationship!
  3. I can supply all 6 trays to forum members only for a discounted price of £995 (free postage if you buy 12)!I gave up reading the description, why do people use such ridiculous fonts?
  4. Hey, hope you're still enjoying that beer, Garrett! I'm sure we'll get that pint someday, Peter! It would be easy going I know! For now, though, you've got bacon and eggs, the morning paper, two daughters rolling in from the clubs (with your credit card in their bag), a nice brew, a doe-eyed dog, and that big warm pussy sat on your lap! Happy Sunday!
  5. You're nicely off-the-wall this evening/morning, Peter! Happy daze!
  6. You must also remember that everyone grabs an occasional upgrade when the circumstances permit, it's all part of the fun! The main point is, don't buy 50 low-grade coins, if that same money can buy you 10 pretty pieces that you're going to enjoy having. You also have to make a decision about whether you gap-fill with lower grade coins because you'll, either never find, or ever afford, an example at all...really depends on the focus of your collection. Welcome aboard, by the way!
  7. I think the thing is you need to strike a balance! If you want to collect the E7 shillings and only have a budget sufficient to buy an UNC 1902, a few in EF, and maybe the 1905 in VF, then that's the best you can buy! It's no more complicated than that, really! If you want to hang out for an UNC 1905, but will never have a penny ever again to spend on coins, then you'll not have an E7 collection of shillings, just a very nice shilling! Interesting point, though!
  8. I have to say, I was really surprised at the response, as the seller seemed to have some interest in history, selling mostly metal detector finds? I really couldn't understand the reply to my offer, with her saying the coin was worth the full listed amount! Unfortunately, I was already strangled at that point to explain - on account of her having reporting me to the 'bay for requesting permission to use her images - that she'd only get £850 if I'd bought it directly on eBay anyway! Bugger, bugger!
  9. I've been watching this 151213090124 shilling for around a year! It's the loveliest example I've seen, and I offered £850 for it when it was first listed at £1100. Around 6 month's later I again privately offered £850, when it was then for sale on eBay at £950, thinking that would be agreeable, given the absence of eBay and PayPal fees? Strangely, this was not agreeable! Anyway, having watched it endlessly go around on 10-day auctions at £950, it has just received a bidder and sold for £950...I hope I see it again someday! If anyone knows the buyer, I would love a set of good pictures, the seller reported me to eBay for unsolicited emails when I asked if I could use the images for die-study purposes! Overall, rather gutted about the whole thing!
  10. Do you think it had any subtle affects on the tone or general appearance of the coin, or has it literally just targeted the verd?
  11. Cotton buds, dip, and acetone...very much with you on that, Peter! Definitely interested in seeing the outcomes of verdicare! Can it be applied locally, and does it affect the surrounding sound metal if you do?
  12. Bloody 'ell, TG! You can go and put your lentils in the microwave now, they'll be cold!
  13. Crikey, TG!!! Having said that, now you've said German, is that an eagle rotated on the right-hand image?I believe it's a shield with diagonal bars. The other side looks like a cross within a shield. The problem is that many city states across Europe produced similar small coins. If you recognise the Arms of the shield, it makes it quicker.Sadly I don't! So it's a matter of thumbing through some auction catalogues in the hope of finding a match or something close enough to then google further! I'll get my coat!
  14. Crikey, TG!!! Having said that, now you've said German, is that an eagle rotated on the right-hand image?
  15. This is more like it, David, some before and after experimentals live on PD! I so wish I'd taken this approach myself when I spent weeks messing around with various coiney things! Looking forward to the next instalments, perhaps, in stages, until the point were the process undoes the aesthetics of the coin?? Sacrifice, you know you want to!
  16. Just for clarification, I'm strongly onboard the weak-strike theory, otherwise we would have found a well struck example by now (surely) to discount it, or otherwise? That's a great resource on CC, what a man, if only we all documented so thoroughly for the benefit of others! I'm not totally sold on the Dr Nicholson explanation be honest!
  17. All the single N coins are very weak at the top of the coin, raising the question as to whether it is a true variety.Stops or no stops is so common in the series that rarity is a moot point. Spelling mistakes are definitely rarer and should command a higher price than 'normal' coins. GVLILEMVS, GVLIEMVS etc are usually from a single die. I'm sure if anybody had the time and money to buy enough of them, it could easily be proved re the single N. It's like that no-stop after DEI I had, which proved to be a block, after finding a perfectly matching die WITH stop! Spink agreed and said they'd make the change, but never did, of course!
  18. How can one of eBay's 'experienced sellers' keep getting it so wrong? Threepence?.............................NOT! Presented in VF grade?............NOT! 1566?........................................NOT! Castle Mintmark?.......................NOT (can't possibly be!)! Displays natural tone allover?....OK, I'll give him that! Elizabeth I..................................YEAH! Tudor.........................................YEAH! England......................................YEAH! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1566-A-D-Queen-Elizabeth-I-England-Tudor-Period-Hammered-Silver-Threepence-Coin-/271373446748?pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item3f2f1e2e5c And this one has been around a little bit, but it really makes me smile when I see it! PM "Latin Cross" http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Elizabeth-I-Silver-Penny-Fine-1580-1-Latin-Cross-Mintmark-/390747884835?pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item5afa638d23
  19. What's the date of that, Paulus? And for how much longer are you going to hide behind the smoke-screen of an 'early-milled silver collector'? I think it's time you came out and told us straight...you love a bit of copper, don't you! Don't be embarrassed about it, there's no shame in it! Is it your's?
  20. The right-hand image looks a fair shout to me! Made all the more confusing by a head AND a tail on the left image!
  21. Here's the cypher HP I picked-up recently! Looking at the 'chains' and portcullis arches on both edges of the obverse, they appear ghosted, for want of a better word, down both sides of the coin. It just doesn't have that look of double-strike to me? Also, the upper-left corner of the PC and arch have the look of a re-cut Vicki penny, and the middle of the cypher definitely has some involvement. I'd never heard of re-using die stock in this way until Rob mentioned it a while back, but I reckon this might be an example? Any thoughts? Edit: in fact I've only just noticed this, but if you imagine the involvement in the centre of the cypher to be an anchor loop, I can now see the shadow of the anchor in the right field to the right of the cypher (0). Anyone else see this? Needless to say, I'm thrilled with this one!
  22. This is quite funny, really, as I remember this topic also being a tad feisty a few years ago. Anyway, something I've learned since, regardless of the legal position, is that (a bit of a generalisation unfortunately) the majority of people who smelt and buy scrap, are mostly the same people who won't ask you too many questions about it. At least that was my experience, once! (Well, twice, actually!)
  23. Classic! No it isn't. Why don't you just...oh, sorry, wrong room!
