Everything posted by £400 for a Penny ?

  1. Coins are on the way out, no doubt.
  2. I've started to play this game too! But back when we were looking for bun & KN pennies we also went to the bank asking for a 5/- bag of copper, how much is a bag of £2 coins at the High St bank? That's cheating. You have to wait and see what the fates direct your way, oh and make a note of what the transaction was. Most of mine have come from the pub, ahem...
  3. Hello and welcome to the forum. I've found one for sale for 80p, which probably means you might get 30p for it if you're lucky? http://www.angelfire.com/ok2/allswell/coins.html
  4. Go to lunch early on wednesday 4th, Colin.
  5. Yes you are right Fubar, both coins seem the same, if you look at the REV to the right of the date there is a small light scratch and the same scratch appears in both auctions, so no idea what he's playing at, whether it's a mistake or whatever Yes, you're right, good spot. Well, I can't think of a scenario in which this has a happy ending, sadly....
  6. And when we've done that, can we move round to HR and Compliance ? They normally have some pretty girls working in HR... And if we've time, we can sweep up any department that has the word 'Excellence' in it's title and then go for a couple of pints. Red, you can stay behind in HR if you want. No, hang on, they'd be dead wouldn't they, that's not right.....
  7. And when we've done that, can we move round to HR and Compliance ?
  8. Hmm, Well that would tend to lend weight to the theory that it's the way he photographs them (or lights them) that makes them seem different, although it has to be said, again, two more very nice strikes by the look of it.
  9. We had a board of this nature at work once and someone calculated that for every contributor, there were 4 non posting lurkers.
  10. Not getting the rub of the green just now eh ? Fingers crossed it turns up.
  11. I can understand the Bank not being massively keen on shelling out £28bn especially at the moment. Must admit, it does all sound very plausible.
  12. As 1949 says Ash, just a Guernsey nugget brought home in a random pocket ?
  13. Interesting tale. Does it follow then, that if the court dismissed the case the Bank has a case to answer I wonder ?
  14. I've got it, but have obviously forgotten it all. The only thing I have retained from reading it( some years ago) is that we used to have gender like the French do, but we dropped it, except not totally. The only remaining adjective that is gender dependent is Blond/Blonde. There are a few nouns too like Fiance/Fiancee.
  15. It is interesting. The bit I'm struggling with is the fact that we're talking about valuable metals and not a token coinage where quantitive easing is possible. The point there being that if there was a central issuing source, the King say, he's not going to just give it away is he, so how does it get into circulation. Maybe the day to day business of being a King is sufficiently involved that his court/advisers spend enough to get coins into circulation that way ? I suppose we aren't talking about massive mintages are we and also the vast majority of the country didn't use coins, they bartered. I like the barter system, so much so in fact, that I am going to attempt to pay for my newspapers this morning with a chicken...
  16. I can see what you're saying, but it's not a '1' it's a piece of something that has got onto the die. You're tilting at windmills again Don.
  17. No, not IMO, the die isn't very clean and there are 'bits' all the way up from 6 O'clock to 9 O'clock. As for the lettering, well, mine's exactly like that.
  18. Off topic, but I've always wanted to ask an American about this. It seems reasonably clear that someone has sat down and painstakingly de-Frenchified, if that's a word, the English language. The obvious one is the OU that you have identified, but then there's Centre/center, Defence/Defense etc, etc. I have always assumed that this was something to do with the Louisiana purchase, do you know ?
  19. I suppose, thinking about it, that it must have been a private enterprise. For example you are the moneyer, approved by the King of the day with a set of dies in various denominations. I have a large silver bowl left to me by my grandmother and I bring it to you, we agree on it's weight, say 5lbs of .925 I leave it with you and a week later come back to collect 5lb of coins minus your fee. I then use the coins in the course of my daily business and they enter circulation that way. Can't see how it would work otherwise - if you already had 5lbs of coins made up, that would make you a bank. Any other theories ?
  20. Thinking aloud, Clive, on the assumption that banks hadn't been invented yet, do you know the actual mechanics of how coins entered circulation in this period ?
  21. John, no offence taken, but we all have to, HAVE TO, encourage fresh interest rather than talk jargon on their first post, no ? I have the cape, I make the 'whoosh' noise, but still I am no nearer the stars.....
  22. Strong words. And besides, I was trying to help the fellow - I notice everyone who's posted so far has totally ignored him, not even acknowledged his presence. Where are we without new entrants to the hobby ? There were in fact 2 answers to his post 400 lol. I can't see anyone welcoming him and trying to help?

  24. We are leading parallel lives I think Red. Being CII qualified and having witnessed the transition from no regulation to excessive regulation over 20 years, I can report that a shark is a shark and no amount of qualifications will stop him being one.
