  1. When I first started collecting from change, mid to late 60s, all the known rarities were hard to find. H,KN, 1926ME, 46-49 3d, 02 low-tide etc. They, on the whole, had mostly already be removed from circulation. I would say that these now represent a far greater proportion of the remaining predecimal coinage than they did pre 1967.
  2. The reason Mahogany is the wood of choice for coin cabinets is because it is supposed to not effect the coin contain within.
  3. I was thinking 9.15 from Euston but the penny I have that's been on a railway line is a lot smoother.
  4. I keep my collection in a mahogany cabinet and the copper is starting to tone. I have considdered keeping the inside of the cabinet dehumidified, is this a good idea and what is the ideal humidity for storing coins. Gary
  5. Yes, it's OE 1926, looks pretty good for 99p ! It's better than VF not far off EF I'd say That 1938 though, isn't worth more than about 99p and you've got £1.50 postage on top (not such a bargain ) That's a very nice 1926. I've had one disapointment this week, a 1909 which looked as if it could be a 1 to tooth. My hopes were dashed when a couple of days after I won it the seller auctioned another one using the same picture. Yup stock pictures grrrr. I have put in a 'not as described' before when this happens, but I don't know if I can be bothered this time as the coin is in a similar condition. I would have if the picture was EF+ and a worn washer turned up. I'll definitly mention it in the feedback, probably won't neg him though. Anyway I still have hopes for this one. 1911 penny
  6. Yes definitly raised edge, I actually had it in hand when I posted the reply. If you look at the ebay pictures you can just see the edge lettering. It gives the outline a slight lumpy look. Still was taking a chance with my £14 until it arrived. It has a bit of a rub on the fields but still worth flipping back onto ebay with a red box which I have spare. Not to sure when to do it though with Christmas apon us. If I put it on for 10 days it would finish on the Sunday between Christmas and new year. Not sure if anyone will be spending that sort of money then. Decision decisions.
  7. Specimen? Nice raised edge Proof
  8. Done it again. 1935 crown
  9. Size- wise it's a Guinea, the shilling reverse doesn't have the crossed scepters. It look a bit crued to be a coin and would have a toothed boarder which your pictures don't show. Does it feel heavy for it's size which gold would do. Gary
  10. Well, I'm still not convinced. B&M, Christies Rome. What's it doing on ebay 20th Centry Crowns are my favourite series in my collection also. The best I can do for 1935 is a Davies 1652. Gary
  11. I don't know if this is an ebay laugh, someone been sold a pup or a scam. 1935 proof There's just so much wrong with this one. He starts off calling it a pattern (proof) the picture shows an incuse so it's not a pattern, the pattern has raised edge text. He then goes on to give it a Rayner number 337A rarity of R6 3-5 known, well R6 is 3-4 known. So it seems he's not really sure if it's a 377 at 5-10 or 377A at 3-4. He then goes on to talk about Edward VIII, ok no way of disputing this but the clincher is that the coin has the wrong reverse for either a 377 or 377A. It should be a 1+B and the coin shown is a normal 1+A. Wonder if by chance he's got hold of a specimen issue which are a bit proof-like. Gary
  12. If anyone wants the 1906, 1907, 1909 and 1910 the first to pm me their address can have them as a free give away. The 1908 F164A worth over £600 I'm keeping myself. lol The pennies are going to Scott

  14. Here's my next entry on this topic. A couple of weeks ago I won these on ebay. They were up for the normal 0.54 ausie cents but some numpty with a feedback of 20 decided to chuck $10 into the pot so I ended up paying nearly £6 including postage. When my camera has had a bit of a charge I post a picture of the results
  15. I was going to say the 1983 2 new pence but as they were supposedly only put into sets I guess it doesn't really count.
  16. It does look as though there is something there. It's in the wrong place for a 6 over 5. saying that, it's in the wrong place for any legitimate number. Verystrange. Gary
  17. I've only got the three Davies Obverse in the currency pieces. There would be four Obverses in the proof range if you incluse the Obv3 square and chamferred rim. I only have the two Obv3 proofs, Obv1 and Obv2 are both speculartive. Gary
  18. I have a copy of COIN 1989 year book published by coin monthly if it of any use. Gary
  19. Thanks for that Peter. I had a look at CC's Oxford Collection results : £475 for a nBU example, not what I'd call "cheap"! Even the GVF went for £120 (I suspect it might fetch more than that now - there isn't a whole heap of difference between those two examples in the Oxford sale). Here's mine (thanks to this post I've now seen 5 times as many as I had in my life up to now!) : "If anyone can (botch your pictures with their terrible scanners), Canon can" £120 for a GVF, I paid £107 for my GEF at one of London Coins Dublin Auctions a couple of years ago.
  20. I prefer to use the I of DIE to tell them apart as I find using the TT I need the coins in hand to tell the difference. The close T has the I to tooth and the wide T the I to gap. Here's mine.
  21. I've got 1903 obv 1 and 2a, 1905 obv 1 and 2, 1906 obv 1 and 2a Gary
  22. Goulby or Gouby? I only know Gouby. My mistake, yes it should by Gouby. Anyway to put you all out of you misery, if you look at the helmet where it meets the plume it looks like the damaged die metioned by Freeman and I think there was an artical about its dicovery in the papers many years ago. Of course it could just be the light. Oh yes! The 'helmet die flaw' stalk. I wonder how that relates in scarcity to the 1966 'extra wave' flaw? Just turned out to be a ding to the helmet ooo eer. At least the 0.54 assie cent 1911 1d turned out ok although it only made a disapointing £41 on ebay. There seems to be a trend here, I seem to pay much more on ebay than anyone else.

  24. Hopefully yes. I'll leave it a bit longer before I explain to see if anyone else picks it up or if it me just going mad.
