Wow, thanks for that, please excuse my ignorance,but the shield reverse, is that from a groat die or similar or were some threepence struck with that size shield as I’ve still not found one on tinternet

Thanks guys, I didn’t realise Galata had done a book on threepences, and you wrote it Dave I believe. Looks very concise, but a little out of my price range for coins I don’t find many of.I also looked in some BNJ publications on Lizzie coins and found very little that was of help only that BA stood for broad arrowhead ( pheon) . so quite a rare coin then Dave?

Can anyone help me with this hammered found last week. I know it’s in very poor condition, but what caught my attention was the size of the shield on the reverse. It’s looks unusually large for a threepence. Mint Mark is Pheon, and date I think is1561, although the one isn’t clear. Spink list two types ,large flan,(inner circle 15mm) and small flan (inner circle 14mm). I’ve measured this one and the reverse inner circle is 15mm and the obverse 14mm. As yet I haven’t been able to track another threepence down like it thanks in advance Richard i

Thought you might like to see bigger pictures of the milled 6d

Due to the wet weather I’ve spent the afternoon taking pictures of some coins I’ve dug up and playing about on my iPad. I finally managed to work out how to put a picture on my profile. It’s an Elizabeth I milled sixpence I found probably ten years ago on what was my favourite detecting field , now sadly covered in green waste which has completely f#@£ed it. The field has produced approximately 100 or so hammered from all periods ,and this one was sitting on top of the soil just covered by some loose stubble. I got a signal from my detector and swept my foot over the top of the soil and exposed this wonderful coin. What I thought I might do in future is change my profile picture when I find a half decent hammered or to one I’ve found in the past

Can anyone confirm please what bust type this groat of mine is. I found it a couple of years ago but have been in two minds over what it is. Is it a mule, as the mm on the reverse doesn’t look like a rose as on the obverse. many thanks Richard

According to Withers , “The Galatea guide to the Pennies of Edward I and II”those with terminal stops at the end of the legend are all 10cf

Thought I would share this with you good people, found by me detecting late last year. According to Withers , a class 10 cf, very common , usually . But this one has three pellets before the initial cross making it very rare apparently. How rare is it, that’s what I want to know, anyone else got one? Richard

So there was a Pieres at Roxburgh during Alexander II. So I think I might have solved it myself. Or have I ?
