The alternative is slabbing....which we surely don't want. I've actually bought some George 5th copper off Ebay with no pictures just a grade....I looked at the dealers feedback and he was getting a lot of repeat business....I got great coins at a fraction of book price....but I did my homework.....Caveat Emptor. Ebay isn't the only problem....dealers lists from which I have used for 30 years vary...I now make adjustments to whom the dealer is. I've even sent coins back to Colin Cooke (RIP) who actually would tell me if I would like a coin or not when trying to order it. However some "must have" coins have appeared on less favoured dealers lists so I keep them all coming. Older copper I hate grading and here I go for Eye appeal. I'm sure the soon to be new owner of Rob's coin will be very happy....I wouldn't mind it for £15

Nice coin but not Unc....the pictures don't fully help (could be between gvf & ef) nef looks the grade although still very rare. A very much in demand coin.

A cracking date with small and large date and differing nr of Berries (In Victoria's hair) The H is the most common but is still worth checking out...as Whybrit notes. The non Heaton 1875 is rare small & large date....if in VF+ get it if the price is right. It took me 20 years to get the small date in a grade I wanted (without Mrs Peter knowing)

Tom You may like to know that all British silver coins(milled....I thought I better add that) minted before 1920 were made from .925 silver. After 1920 and until 1946 they were made from .50 silver. 1947 onwards we have cupro-nickel. So your shillings are nice silver.

I'm afraid the dreaded GREEN is with you for life (Verdigris) It will also spread to other copper coins....so weedle the little rascal out. The green patina is a chemical reaction and is brought on by humidity etc. You may notice the green patina on some domed buildings....this is because Architects like to specifying a copper covering which turns green...and looks quite attractive.....not on coins though

Have you been upsetting a few folk . There are so many muppetts I don't bother anymore...From Mr Pratt who thought his 1936 vf 1/2d was very rare and deserved a starting bid of £15....i pointed out £1 max and my history of 40 years collecting and was met with a torrent of gobbledegook....about spinks,pricing and grading. Geordie try speaking to ebay....it may be a pain sometimes but those coins DO APPEAR.

Great coins.....but have they been cleaned? I suppose ancients is the one area where cleaning isn't so frowned upon and actually required.

You will find almost every time you upgrade a 1/4d pre 1860 you find a variety...especially 18 century and earlier....now how many 1735's have I ???
