The short answer is that die issues are very localised and will be seen in the same particular place(s) on many top grade examples. Wear tends to be more generalised, starting from the highest points of the design and spreading downwards. I'm not sure what you mean by reflections in relation to wear?

It's not even a fake - it's a reproduction coin that doesn't even pretend to be a close approximation of the original. I note that "Guest's" link above now points to a similar 1909 halfcrown which IS properly described as a reproduction, though the description of "rare coin" is total BS.

Ok, I'm not looking at other answers so this is entirely off the top off my head. The £9 is rather misleading. They should have paid £25/3 = £8.33 each plus a 66p share of a £2 tip to the waiter. I.e. £9 each IN TOTAL including the tip to the waiter. So they actually paid the waiter £3 too much.

It could be the Mint is slow to issue the full figures? I remember in the late 70s seeing that the figure for 1976 50p's was less than a million, and I started collecting them avidly (though oddly I never questioned that there were plenty out there). It later turned out that that was a provisional figure only and in the end there were millions.

Sorry - yes you're right, VAT is only added to the premium. But I stand by my assertion that this is not the slightest bit relevant to the values listed in catalogues and price guides, which are not offers to sell or relating to any one specific item.

I can't think of an auction house that would NOT be VAT registered? In any case, I wasn't talking about reclaiming VAT, just paying it in the first place, and its non-relevance to price guides (which is what I assume the OP was about?).

(Apologies for leaving Rob's name there - when editing the quoted post I didn't seem able to remove it). You really want to track down that article in the BNJ (issue 74?) which is the most comprehensive piece on those coins that I've read.

Catalogues and guides that list prices are simply estimates of the coin's approximate value in whatever country / currency applies where the guide is published. Things like VAT are absolutely not relevant, as the values listed are not actual selling prices and therefore any tax would not apply. However, when buying from a (UK) dealer, bear in mind that VAT will be included in the price asked and may have been a factor in the price the dealer decided to sell at (also bear in mind that a dealer will only use a guide to get a rough idea of the market; his actual selling price will be gauged on : how much he/she paid what demand there is for that particular coin if there are particular buyers in mind how quickly a sale is required When buying from an auction house, bear in mind that they will add VAT to the hammer price, plus whatever buyers premium applies there. So the most important thing to remember is that a coin guide is just that - a guide. The only value a coin has is what anyone is prepared to pay for it. Tax matters are outside the scope of guides.
