  1. A little something for those of you who might want to add a touch of colour to your collection... A "Spectacular" Penny?
  2. You didn't miss the the proof by much as it sold for £100. Did anyone else have any better luck in Neil's auction?
  3. An exceptionally fine collection of farthings is being offered for sale by Neil Paisley with some seldom seen rarities including a Cromwell pattern farthing. Oxford Collection
  4. How often does one have an opportunity to acquire a professionally and expertly encapsulated 1946 Edward VIII crown? One of a kind
  5. A curious halfcrown
  6. Better put on some sunglasses before viewing this. Another example of the obsession some American collectors have with colourful coins -- many of which had help in getting that way. A Colourful Penny
  7. Here's an unusual item that has yet to attract any bids... Double-headed 1933 Penny?
  8. Don't worry Oli. British collectors and dealers have have too much sense to be taken in by the silliness of our US "micro-grading". It won't last.
  9. For those of you who have ever wondered what became of the 1933 penny that went missing many years ago... 1933 Penny
  10. Perhaps this thread should have been entitled Dishonestly, a proof? Here's a link to another predecimal thread regarding another "proof" penny previously offered for sale by the same seller. 1934 "proof" penny
  11. Hopefully we'll all soon get to see these coins. Didn't the Colin Adams sale also have a 1933 Lavrillier pattern penny, which was featured on the cover of the catalogue?
  12. Have you by any chance seen it, Rob?
  13. I can't believe that no one has made mention of this yet (news of it was posted on the PCGS forum some time ago), but Neil Paisley of Colin Cooke will be featuring a fine collection of pennies for sale. My understanding is that the bidding procedure will be similar to that used in the sale of Colin Cooke's farthing collection. Here's the brief announcement on the Colin Cooke website: COMING SOON: The Alderly Collection of Pennies - The finest known collection of Pennies to come on the market
  14. For those of you who all along suspected that we American collectors value British coins too highly...come to think of it I don't believe that there were any British pennies struck in 1957. I wonder what he's selling? 1957 Penny
  15. Peter...Coin collecting is a great hobby and can turn out to be a great investment and thus supplement one's pension, but bear in mind that prices for many coins have sharply increased in recent years and it should not come as a surprise if at some point, the market heads the other way.
  16. I ran across this coin on the internet today. It claims to be a 1936 proof penny. It certainly does not appear to be one. 1936 "proof" penny
  17. If this piece were counterfeit, it is likely contemporary, and collectible thus. I have Scottish counterfeits from the time and they are more interesting than the authentic coins. Contemporary counterfeits are highly collectible, but I don't think that this is one of them.
  18. Did anyone here attend the Baldwin's Sale today?
  19. Rob... Everyone can and does collect as they choose. What is being questioned here is the wisdom of paying an extraordinary sum of money for piece of plastic without which the coin would be worth little if anything above face value.
  20. Precisely, but keep in mind that not all of us American collectors are taken in by this nonsense.
  21. Were you or anyone else ever able to identify the planchet on which this coin was struck?
  22. The fellow who got caught is likely just the tip of the iceberg. When American collectors are willing to shell out many multiples of a coin's value just because it has great colouring or toning, it only invites this sort of thing.
  23. Congratulations, Oli! You did great!
  24. Looks to me as if this "toothed border" might have been made using actual teeth.... Rare 1860 Mule
  25. Have a Happy Birthday, JMD -- and forget the glider!
