Apart from that, it's a lovely coin, I think. I might have a bite myself. Quite by accident I found I had a good selection of 1858 overdates so starting actively filling gaps by Gouby classification of them. Gouby's 1858 page - well worth a read

Far better to do your own, Oxford. If you're not too up on database software, use a spreadsheet. If you're not too up on spreadsheets, what better way to learn than with something you're interested in, rather than someone else's meaningless tutorials. My Excel workbook has 200 fields for each coin, but that's ridiculous, and because it has evolved over many years, rather than been designed. Only put in what you actually need, not everything you can, and you're more likely to end up with a sensible list, like Rob's!

Looks genuine enough to me, Garry. Nothing special though - large accumulations of average material are the lifeblood of ebay.

That's the nail hit squarely on the head there, Gary. That's why microvarieties do it for me - they keep the collection alive. Elizabeth II wouold have been complete, done and dusted, years ago if it wasn't for Messrs Freeman, Davies, Gouby and Groom, and a complete collection is a dead collection in my view. Every time I find out about a new variety, it revitalises an area that was dormant. Yes, you can always find a better UNC, but I don't want to be constantly buying identical coins to try and get a tiny upgrade. Like it or not, the two kinds of 59 1/- Sc are not identical coins.

Well I had 1233 this time last year, and I have 1154 now. I have sold 703 this year, so that means I must have bought 624. I too am concentrating on getting the overall numbers down and the average values up. Average value per coin end 2010: £11.59 Average value per coin now: £18.05 Of course, being a date/variety collector, I still have all the cheap 20th century coins I bought early on, so it gets progressively harder to bring the average up.

According to our esteemed Mr Groom, there are two kinds of 1959 Scottish shilling. Look at the 3 little diamonds at the base of the crown. Type 1: all 3 touch the baseline Type 2: only the left hand diamond touches the baseline. In my experience, type 2 is commoner. 18 Type 2s have passed through my hands in the last 5 years, compared to 12 Type 1s.

If I had any coins ex-Pearce, I'd call that a selling point. ex-the Pwincess and the Coin Collector doesn't quite have the same ring to it!

Are you sure? I thought I bought a a couple fairly recently end of Oct. I'm sure one was a "delicious" 1936! Haven't tasted it yet though! Quite right Debbie, 23rd October, and an EF 1949 Scottish at the same time!

I've never seen anything better than Colin's site. Like MichaelCoins, it's a publication in its own right. Knocks spots off Freeman and Peck too.

I shudder to think how many laws they could be breaking there! And I bet they didn't tell them to only take pics of the best side of the coin...
