Chris Perkins Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 When I drove 800 miles from Rochester to Chemnitz in Germany via Delft in the Netherlands I got caught on a speed camera just around the corner from my destination in Germany! With about 2 miles left I got caught on a speed camera, can you believe it!We got a photo in the post today. I was doing 64KPH on a 50KPH stretch of road. Fortunatley, the German police aren't the money grabbing &%*!?@+ that the UK police are sometimes claimed to be, and this will cost me a mere EUR25.00 (£16.66) and no points. Quote
smudge Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 Bummer. I got caught twice in 5 weeks on the M4 in South Wales earlier this year, by these new "Camera protection units". They are white trasit type vans that sit on bridges over the motorways, and can clock you at a mile away. (with photos). They have little flaps that open in the side of the vans, and a camera lens sticks out. By the time you see them its too late." Big brother is here". Quote
Master Jmd Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 I was doing 64KPH on a 50KPH stretch of road. Tut, tut, tut...i am supriesed that loonies like you are aloud on the roads ...unlucky Quote
Emperor Oli Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 Buy a snooper! My granddad has one and they're super - they detect all the kinds of camera and give adequate warning. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 28, 2004 Author Posted September 28, 2004 Hang on! Your Granddad breaks the speed limit!!? I don't know any Granddads that go over 35MPH, even on Motorways! Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 Buy a snooper! My granddad has one and they're super - they detect all the kinds of camera and give adequate warning. I thought that "snoopers" were illegal, I do however support them totally because the police are just looking for an excuse to raise money. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 Oh God my granddad is a maniac on the road! HPJ, snoopers are legal, they wouldn't be able to sell them in shops otherwise. Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I must be confusing them with another device I saw on television. Quote
Sylvester Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I wonder Oli...They sell blank music CDs in shops that's legal, but depending upon how you may be inclined to use them that part is not.Actually if burning a CD without copyright is illegal then recording songs off of the radio onto a tape is equally illegal as is recording a backup copy of a CD onto a tape. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Yes, but Snoopers have a specific purpose, nothing else can be done with them. They can hardly be used for "research purposes". Cds on the other hand - data can be recorded onto them, not just music, games etc. Quote
Master Jmd Posted October 2, 2004 Posted October 2, 2004 Cds on the other hand - data can be recorded onto them, not just music, games etc. Wrong...i have a few blank cd's which only music can be stored on them, it says that specificly on the back of the case! Quote
Emperor Oli Posted October 2, 2004 Posted October 2, 2004 You will still probably be able to record data onto it - what brand are they? Quote

Exactly... though i think Oli has a point that you can use them for data. But they are branded as being for 'Music'.It's kinda like magic mushrooms legal to grow and pick, illegal to cook/use. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted October 2, 2004 Posted October 2, 2004 Wasn't it the same with prohibition? Everything apart from consumption was banned? Or have I just made that up? Quote
Master Jmd Posted October 2, 2004 Posted October 2, 2004 You will still probably be able to record data onto it - what brand are they? They are 'imation CD-R' and i have tried to save data onto one of them before but my pc just said something along the lines of 'this type of document/file is not compatible with windows medie player 5.0 or higher' Quote
mint_mark Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 Cds on the other hand - data can be recorded onto them, not just music, games etc.Wrong...i have a few blank cd's which only music can be stored on them, it says that specificly on the back of the case!It doesn't really matter... Oli may want to record his own music (that he composed and played) onto the CD, which is enough to establish that they have a non-infringing use. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted March 17, 2005 Author Posted March 17, 2005 By the way, I found out a month or so later that I'd got done twice on the originally mentioned journey from Kent to Chemnitz! This time though, two policemen turned up on my door (in Germany) because I gave them the UK address hoping it would put them off!It didn't. This one was EUR250.00 and 3 German points! The good thing is that German points will never affect me because I have a UK licence, and the DVLA don't get to know about them, so the points were rather pointless.I wondered then about what fun it would be to collect points from as many European countries as possible. Don Camillo's God Son Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 I think the law on 'snoopers' is particularly strange. As I understand it, it's legal to have one. It's legal to use one to know where there is a speed trap. But it's actually illegal to act on the info!!! Work that one out... Quote
Peter Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 The project I'm currently working on has 4 cameras. There is only film in one and that changes!!!!!!When they were first installed it was like a disco....they certainly improved the traffic flowand helped safety. Quote

OUCH!That hearts! E250!!!!I guess that giving them the UK address and making them waste time had something to do with the fine been so high.... Quote

It is legal to make a back up copy of a CD you own. For example, if you own a CD and have it at home and you copy it to have it in the car, it is legal, as it is your CD that you are coping. If you give it to some one else then that is not legal, if they don't have an original. Quote
Don Camillo's God Son Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 Making a 'back up' copy of your own cd's is NOT legal. I've done work with the performing rights society and believe me that one's a myth. Won't stop me though! Quote
Geoff T Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 Wearing my academic musician's hat I second what Don Camillo's Godson says. For our stundents to make legal copies we have to have valid licences from the MCPA and ERA. Making copies at home for whatever purpose is illegal in the UK.Geoff Quote
tubandpud Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 Back to the speed cameras - our local radio tell us in the morning where the police will be pointing theirmobile cameras around the area - the only useful piece of info on the radio !! Quote
