azda Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Just noticed the error in this shilling. Is this common. I'll not Point it out just yet and see if anyone else picks up on it.Stuart, Rob Clive? Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Double Z?That's a result of the striking error. Lots of letters are doubled with this, the Z just being far more prominent. The inner circles do not join up which is a clear indicator of a double-strike. Otherwise, I'm missing something as I do not see another error. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Is this common. From my experience, yes, but is much more commonplace on the larger denominations. Quote
Coinery Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 It's a pretty impressive example of the double-strike phenomenon, in that it fit's an entire letter 'impossibly' into the legend! In this example, which is quite nice to be able to see it so clearly, you can see the foot of the A that's 'hidden' beneath the second Z, touching up against the foot of the 1st Z in exactly the same orientation as the visible A does, following the second Z!I think that makes sense?
