Nobody has properly sorted the 1804 dollar and associated patterns into originals and restrikes. With the obvious underlying features of an 1801 8 reales, this is clearly an original Soho piece. For anybody interested enough to study them, there is a worthwhile project to be undertaken here. Quote
azda Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 (edited) Poorly struck to. D and E of DEI virtually missing, strange for a pattern. I bet the seller is smiling considering he did'nt know what it actually was Edited June 17, 2012 by azda Quote

I bet the seller is smiling considering he did'nt know what it actually wasIt isn't unusual considering what you effectively have is a double struck coin with the underlying 1801 8 reales detail showing through the second strike which is the dollar. If you had a strong strike on the 8 reales, the relatively mountainous detail would require more striking force to eliminate it. A worn coin might easily show no trace. All options are possible. azda Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 And here's a 1791 Proof Pattern Guinea in Pewter. Spoke to this guy several times regarding Platt, he was a frequent buyer from him until he also spotted his shill bidding. He has several more nice coins listedhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330750293204?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D330750293204%26_rdc%3D1 Quote

Mint state I'd say it would be £1500-2000. Quote

Trouble is, half the people on eBay don't realise there is a parallel universe where you can also buy coins. The fields would suggest it may have been cleaned at some point or at least wiped. It's one of those things that needs to be top notch if spending that sort of money and for that you would want to see it in the hand. Edited June 18, 2012 by Rob Quote
