TerryT Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Finally got a camera that can zoom in close enough to show them. Photos of the 6 in next post. Quote
Accumulator Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 A recut numberMany of the 1876H pennies have the bar in the H damaged or even missing. The date is either recut or double struck. Here's an example of mine, showing a smiler effect on the '1' and with the bar on the H missing: Quote
TerryT Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 H over small H ? Sure doesn't look like a simple recut. Quote
Rob Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 H over small H ? Sure doesn't look like a simple recut.Looks it bearing in mind you have three sizes of H for pennies, halfpennies and farthings. One of the 1876H halfpennies has a 6 over a farthing 6 and one 1856 halfpenny die has the 6 over a penny 6. I think these punch varieties are more common than people might assume with some taken for a displaced underlying letter rather than a larger one. Quote
