azda Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Picked this up today while at the Numismata coin fair in Munich. I took it over to the Baldwin table after getting it and asked what they thought. The older guy who was obviously the boss took a good look and was a little nerved by the 5 in the date, so i'm poppong it on here for 24hrs before i head back tomorrow with some pictures for the old guy at Baldwins, he simply stated that it's hard to tell without a scoped picture, so here it is for you gents first of all.Opinions appreciated as usual. azda Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 (edited) A more closer view in 2 pics, it was a little to big at 200x magInterestingly enough, the older gent said he had one in BUNC many years ago Edited March 3, 2012 by azda Quote
Debbie Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Hi azda, as you know I am no expert but here is the photo of the other very worn 1850 shilling that was on ebay last month. This is the one that’s probably been altered, but the 5 does look different? And the 0 seems to be nearer to the ribbon than yours. Might help? Quote

The 5 looks double struck, but doesn't look like it has been altered. Quote

Great close up photo too! Also just out of interest you mention Baldwin, was there any other dealers from the UK at this fair? Quote
Hussulo Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Again not an expert by any shot on these as I haven't studied them nor have I owned one but looking at your pictures the thing that makes it appear genuine to me is the doubling of the 5. The 8 is doubled and the doubling of the 5 ties in well with it. Would a forger alter the date and include the doubling, I would imagine that would be hard to do and it would have to have been done by someone with plenty of insight. I also can't see any obvious signs of alteration from the picture but it does have toning around the date which makes it harder to tell (not that you should clean the coin by any means). Quote

VickySilver Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Very similar to my own gF (yikes I hate having such a poor specimen) coin in all ways, including the date. I vote REAL DEAL. Quote
