Paulus Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I have the coin below, and know very little about it ...I have no reason to doubt its authenticity, but how can I verify this? Thanks for any pointers. Quote
Peckris Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I have the coin below, and know very little about it ...I have no reason to doubt its authenticity, but how can I verify this? Thanks for any pointers. It's S456 - a Julius Caesar denarius, elephant obverse, and reverse priestly emblems. Spinks also give a RRC number 443/1. This refers to Crawford's Roman Republican Coinage. The value in F would be between £75 and £100.Here's mine (different design): Quote

The colour is a little odd (yellowish) for silver but that may simply be the photo. It should be ok, but a wider opinion would be useful. Quote
argentumandcoins Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 The easiest way to tell a forgery is to place it on a sheet of paper and draw around it with a pencil. Most forgeries are on circular blanks, the originals are never fully round. Another pointer is the surface (yours looks like it was struck rather than cast) or the edge. A good proportion of forgeries have a seam visible around the circumference. Quote
