a fake?

Evening all. I have a 1926 shilling (modified I think ) which is ever so slightly bigger than my other shillings which has been puzzling me. I know its slightly bigger as it doesn’t fit into any of the “shilling spaces†in my 1902 – 1936 Whitman folder ( I know this may not be the best way of storing my coins!) All the rest seem to fit perfectly snugly. Do you think it could be a fake?

There aren't any obviously wrong indicators. How much bigger is it? Could it be struck on a flan designed for something else? If so, is it silver?

Its only very slightly larger, almost as if the rim bows outward a little and grooves along the edge stick out too much.I'm not sure how I would test if is silver? It weighs 6g, but my scales are not super acurate.

It's the slightly scarcer unmodified head shilling and looks to be in a nice high grade. It doesn't look fake to me, perhaps the collar was a little worn which might explain a slight increase in diameter.

Especially for A UNC/UNC coins to fit into. If the rest are mid/low grade they will have lost a fraction from the diameter. Peck is quite correct, the only really accurate test is a digtal caliper set which you can pick up for peanuts on ebay/tinternet.

However I do have 7 of these folders and it doesn't seem to fit into any of the spaces.I take your point about it being a higher grade than some of my other coins Argumentus, but I have at least a dozen that I would have said were a similar grade and these seem to fit.I'll have a look to see if I can get hold of some digital calipers! Nah! I can't grumble too much though as it's one of my favourites and it hasn't been this cheap in what seems a very long time

Nah! I can't grumble too much though as it's one of my favourites and it hasn't been this cheap in what seems a very long time

Compared to petrol, ANYTHING looks cheap!
