Hi guys.

I have just been reading a little about the Brit penny 1926 Modified effigy. I recently acquired a bag of old UK coins, mainly pennies and half pennies ranging from 1880 to 1959. With some sixpences and shillings to boot. Brit coins have not been much interest to me until I started to read about the differences with the pennies and halfpennies, ie Low and High tides, Smooth waves and modified effigies etc. I know in the book it mentions a 1926 penny with a modified effigy along with one or two other dates, however I have noticed on one of mine, namely a 1927 George VI what appears to be a modified effigy. The semi colon is almost touching the letter T. Can anyone give me any info on this coin. ie Is it genuine or has anyone seen this type before

Your pictures are far to small to see anything on them

Hi Derek,

The modified effigy is in fact Obverse 4 of the series and occurs alongside Obverse 3 in 1926 and is used solely in 1927 before Obverse 5 takes over in 1928, so all 1927 pennies should have Obv 4 and Reverse C.

Hard to see much from your photo though :)

Thanks for that. My guide book does not mention these facts, on the date and price pages. ( cheap books)

So this coin is pretty common then? My guide book says £2 vf

Yes unfortunately, pretty much scrap. The book may say £2 but try and find somebody that actually wants a 1927 penny in VF... Had it been a 1926, maybe about £80-£100. 1927 was a unique year however, as it had the modified head in its original larger form in conjunction with the re-cut reverse, but as for value? Sadly not.

Well, both of those are of considerably more interest than the 1927 ;)
