Advice needed

Hi there,

As I said in one of my previous posts, I collect mostly Portuguese coins, but I have a crush for Victorian coins, particularly the coppers. I would like to have one of each face value and, in the long run, one of each type. Any year is fine with me, so I tend to go for the cheapest ones...

Does this makes any sense? any advice?

So far I have 4 (farthing, penny, half penny, 3 pence) so still a long way to go. This is my favourite one, with a beautiful patina.

In 3 weeks time, I will be in Bristol and Sheffield, can anyone advice me good numismatic shops to visit?

I am also willing to swap coins, if any of you is interested.

These are nice, but for me a good early bun penny is about as good as it gets.

Unfortunately, neither Bristol nor Sheffield are anywhere near me. Since the two towns cover nearly a million people, there must be somebody on this forum who knows.

Unfortunately, I can't find anything for Sheffield or Bristol. It's often the case that coin shops are in the smaller towns, or seaside resorts, rather than the big cities ~ the exceptions being London, Birmingham,Manchester & Glasgow.

See if I understand - you want a type set of each major Victorian type, especially the coppers/bronze?

Then your best strategy is to go for high grade coins like your 1899 penny, but stick to common years. So for the copper penny halfpenny farthing, that would mean 1853 or 1858. For bronze bun head, 1861 or 1890 (for farthings, 1884/5/6 are VERY common). For Old Head, 1901 (or 1899 as you've started there already!)

If you decided to expand into silver, the Jubilee Head denominations for 1887 are very common, and for Old Head, 1893. For Young Head it's a bit more of a complex area, come back and ask if you get interested in those.

If you buy an issue of Coin News you can find the details of most dealers in it, towards the back.
