George III (penny) & 1858 Victoria coin

Hello all,

I would be grateful for some information regarding the coins I have attached below, in particular:

1. what grade they would be considered to be;

2. If they have any value; and

3. What denomination the 1858 Victoria coin is? (any further info would be appreciated)

The George III penny weighs approx 27g and is 35mm across.

The Victoria coin, weighs approx 19g and is 33mm across.

Robert, could you post larger images of the 58 Rev, looks like a penny and the weight/width would confirm this, but there

are several varieties all have differing values and grade is hard to determine with the attached image.

Robert, unfortunately not in the best of condition, the verdigris would normally be the nail in the coffin, but,

there is a but, and the reason I asked for a clearer image.

It looks like it is a large Rose reverse, quite rare, I have seen them change hands on Ebay circa £50 in similar

condition, when presented correctly.

How can I find out the different variations of a coin. Is it a case

of posting on the forum or should I purchase a specialist book I.e. Spunk?

For example I have a couple of the Victoria coins but would

not know the difference. I do appreciate I am very new to this and it will be a steep learning curve

but I am keen to find out about the coins I have been given.

Not sure if I am going to sell them or not. Just trying to get initial idea of values and grades at present.

I think you mean Spinks, the other is a top shelf book!?

Most publications will deal with the commoner varieties, this forum and some of the members have

published some very good general guides which are relatively inexpensive compared to the more

promenant publications containing similar information, and are as good if not better.

Post questions and images, there is always someone online that will be happy to help.

Hi Rob. The 1797 penny is around Fine condition (strict graders might say a bit less) and would be worth around a tenner. The 1858 is also a penny from the dimensions, and is around VF though a little grubby! The commonest varity is also worth around a tenner. There are several scarcer varieties but the coin would need much closer inspection.

Its also good to arm yourself with some books if your going to get into the coin collecting. Spink is probably the biggest seller, but for specifics such as Pennies you would probably want either Freemans or Michael Gouby's Penny book, they list varieties of Pennies
