1797 George III Coin

Hello all,

I would be grateful for some advice as I am a newbie to this hobby; having been given numerous coins by mother-in-law that belonged to her late husband.

I have attached a photo of one of the coins in this collection and would like to know:

1. What grade a coin in this condition would be considered to be? and

2. Does it have any value?

The reason I ask is because I have seen similar coins on various websites seling from .99p up to a few hundred! also, I took this and other coins along to a dealer and was offered .50p for it.

I would also like to find out more information regarding the other coins I have in the collection so would like some advice with regards how to post them on this site i.e. new thread for each coin or just try to submit as many photos of the coins at once?

Finally, I have been doing some research on this coin but would appreciate any information you may wish to share as I have started a website recording the coins I have been given, slow process as I have only listed one so far, but if you are interested then the address is 'www.thechestofcoins.com'. Hi Rob, welcome to the forum. The coin you have is i think a copper 2pence, the grade looks to be a VF (very fine) or maybe a little better, but i'm not sure from the pictures, is there green spots on it as this could be Virdignis or copper disease. The rim is a little worse for wear around the coin, also bear in mind you're asking a dealer how much it's worth to him, but 50p sounds harsh to me.

Yep, unless my eyes are playing me up it's a 2d, which is a lot rare than the 1d. From what I can see, the grades are VF for the obverse and GVF for the reverse. The coin is not perfect though, as the edge knocks and the staining on the obverse detract. The 50p sounds like 'go away, I've got enough of those'. You could do far better and I would reckon you should get about £40 if you were to sell it on e-bay.

I'd qualify that slightly - it's true that the twopence had a far lower mintage than the penny, but was a far less popular coin due to its size and weight; more were put aside or kept as souvenirs. In that grade or above (VF) they are therefore easier to find than pennies which nearly always turn up well worn. So comparative rarity is something of a moot point!
