This was an ongoing discussion perhaps a month or 2 back, so i'm hoping that anyone who finds any can start posting their pictures here so we can all see what we are looking for. I shall start with a modern fake that i bought from a DEALER no less, and have subsequently learnt that a Sovereign of this series has been faked also, so be aware. This is the Half Sov Proof 1937.

I had done a lot of research on this (albeit after i bought the coin) and found a guy who had written an ebay guide on fakes. He looked at the forum where i had initially posted the coin and he initially though there was a lot of paranoia about it until a friend of his has told him that he'd recently come across and full Sov that was faked. I sent him hi res pics and he in turn sent them to guy who had a full original set of these. I got an email back a few days later saying it was DEFINATELY 100% fake. I had already sent the coin back because there was to many questions about it, so please be aware that these are being faked, along with the full Sov of the series.

And the REV

Very useful information Azda. This fits the bill for the type of forgery that would have appeared pre the current glut of Far Eastern fakes i.e. it is a key date in the series and is likely to be sought after. Many collectors would even turn a blind eye to its dubious origins. In the same vein, forgeries of 1831 and Gothic crowns have been doing the rounds for many years.

£400 posted a link to a forgeries website a few weeks ago (http://www.forgerynetwork.com/Default.aspx,) which I have now bookmarked and it may be worthwhile contacting them about this coin.

Good idea Red, will do it later today as i'm a little busy until later now, but as i said in my post, a full Sovereign has now been faked to, so no doubt the 2 pound will be doing the rounds also. Will bookmark the site and email them later about it. Thanks. Red has given me an idea, when people list links here and there all over the forum, these tend to get lost, so my new idea is, a useful links thread which i'll start with Reds link to the forgery website.

Thanks again Red

It's not anything to with the court case that HM Gov lost against some forgers in the 60/70's (?) is it ?

As I recall, somebody (Turkish ?) started knocking out Sov's and HM Govt took them to court, but the ruling was that as HM Govt had stopped minting them, they technically weren't forgeries. The upshot was that they immediately resumed sovereign production.

I don't know if this could date from that time ?

Ah so, I find this - you'll have to scroll down about a metre to reach the article on the Sovereign fakes;

Actually, this man is right in our area, anyone know him ?

Is there a prize for site find of the day, I fancy my chances......
