Guest nigel Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Hi everyone - I'm new to the forum. I've just got back into coins (used to metal detect when I was a boy). I've been buying a few on ebay and picked up quite a nice detailed Charles I sixpence (ie. VI beside his portrait). But finding it very hard to identify. The reverse has the legend "QVAE DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEP' (correct reading of this appears to be QUAE DEUS CONIUNXIT NEMO SEP). It also has C R divided by a square shield topped with a very large crown. The mm appears to be an acorn. I've googled the legend (in english 'What God has joined let no man put asunder') and it appears to have been on a few previous English coins but the SEP is in full i.e. SEPARET but I cannot find any reference on the internet, in Spink etc for it on a sixpence of Charles I. Has anyone got a Charles I sixpence like this or know of any reference to one in Spink or on google? Many thanks for all your help with this.Nigel Quote

There are a few varieties, so would need a picture to establish which one. Quote
azda Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 I was browsing the Krause catalogue and couldn't see it, probably skipped past it Quote
Guest nigel Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Hi - thanks for the replies so far and for your confirmation that it is Scottish. I will see if I can get a photo of obverse and reverse and load it up. Haven't taken any coin photos yet but I'll have a go. Many thanks for all your quick replies. Nigel Quote

Guest nigel Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Hi, Tried taking some photos but they were really poor. Did some searching on Scottish coins and auctions and found the coin I have in a US auction. It seems as if it might be worth a bit. Mine isn't quite as good condition as the one in this auction but lettering is better and more centred and the portrait is reasonable. Is this coin in any catalogue and are there any up to date values given? Here is the link:http://www.stacks.com/lotdetail.aspx?lsid=AN00000691&asid=AN00000224&lrid=AN00138255&side=RThanks againNigel Quote

Guest nigel Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Hi - attached are photos of the coin I purchased. Sorry if they're a bit small. Paid just over £90. What do you think? Do Scottish coins achieve the book value that azda has quoted? Thanks for all your help.Kind regards,NigelHi, Tried taking some photos but they were really poor.
