Liberty head 1817 One Cent

Here is a Liberty head One Cent coin from United States of America dated 1817.

The coin is approximately the size of a British 2 pence piece. (shown here in comparison in size to an 1881 one cent)

The front has 13 (thirteen stars) round the coin in the middle the bust of Liberty with the word LIBERTY written on the crown (tiara), underneath is the date of 1817.

The back has the wording: UNITED STATES of AMERICA, then a wreath and then ONE CENT in the middle.

I think the coin has seen many better days, what grading would you put on this?

Is there any sort of value to this coin?

Can't see a huge amount from these photos, but yes, it is worn. However, the population of the USA grew exponentially in the 19th century which meant that the number of coins produced also grew in proportion. Because of this, anything American and old (I would class this as old) is worth something, not a fortune but £15 -£20 sort of level. RCL35 is probably your man, but I think to give him a fair stab, you should have another go at the photos.

The coin appears from the images to grade VG-8. Usually those early cents in the early 19th century had mintage ranges in the 2-3 million range which doesn't appear to be huge, but was for the time. The 1817 dated coins are fairly common, but there are a couple of varieties, one has 15 stars on the obverse(face) of the coin and is worth considerably more.

The 1817 Cent is between good and very good in grade. There were 3,948,400 minted. The current value is between $29.00 to $44.00, depending on the good or VG grade, and the star count (13-15 stars). Both have about the same value, until you get to VF or better grades, where the 15 star variety is worth from 2 to 3 times more.

The 1881 is a very common cent with 39,211,575 minted. Value is between $3.50 and $4.50.

All of these prices are retail, which means you could probably expect 50% of that value from a Dealer.

Cheers mate, yes the information was of great help.

Prior to seeing your reply i took the advice from Red Riley & Scottish and had taken some more photos as the original ones were of very poor quality (bit like the coin) .

So whilst i have the on the PC i may aswell upload them.

It is only 13 stars.

Your information, once again has been very helpfull & i hope that these are of a better quality, i know it wont change the price
