hello all..am just new to this forum and this is my first post.

my grandad gave me some coins a few years ago and i was just wondering if there was anything someone could tell me about them as i know bugger all about coins or notes.

the link is to photobucket to the album.ive posted a comment on each oth them to give you a rough idea of what the coins have on them.there is also a note but i have no idea what it is or says.

You have a mixture of low grade foreign and predecimal British coins of which none have value.

The notes I know nothing on but the condition is poor.

If you look on Ebay you will find 1000's of these cluttering up the coin pages....mostly not selling.

Aww. Without contradicting Peter's main message, I'd at least like to say Welcome to the forums smiley

Although you have a pretty low-value group of coins there, don't let that put you off developing an interest in coins. There are some good books on the subject (see the panel above for a good few). And if you browse eBay you will see some good coins too, though you have to sift among many pages of "other stuff" to find them. Good luck, and if you do develop an interest, do come back and post here about it - we're actually a friendly bunch!

I didn't mean to sound harsh....but I was having a crap day and logged on to cheer myself up (recovering from H1N1 & I'm self employed...so a harsh Jan/Feb ahead)

Its probably worth holding on to the stuff for sentimental reasons.

I'm now shifting some sentimental coins on Ebay after hoarding them for years (I've now got better examples) and feel they have served their purpose.

Other peoples trash is other peoples treasure etc.

I was just pointing out you hadn't a fortune...sorry.

Oops I've just re-read mine and it looks as if my last comment was suggesting you'd been UNfriendly. Not intentional, I was just hoping he might take an interest and come back, and if he did, he'd find we're a friendly bunch (unlike some forums). It's hug a coinie day! I think we're actually quite a loveable lot, although I will admit that when I've had a particularly bad day I could qualify for Grumpy Old Men. Sorry to anybody who has encountered me on one of those days, but it was the wife's fault, honest.

I was talking to Chris a while ago, and we both agreed that the miserable, bad tempered rump of dealers are still out there somewhere (no names, no packdrill) and if a newby was to bump into one of them first time out, it would put them off for life, as their predecessors nearly did for me. Far better to log onto this forum and ask anything you want of us pussycats!

When you've had 10 years+ of people phoning and emailing offering - what you know by the clueless tone of their voices (or text) before they even get past 'hello, my name's Chontelle' - is going to be yet another load of worthless scrap metal, it does turn you into a bit of a cynic!

It's difficult not to be grumpy, but I think some people deserve it. Everyone seems to think that old means valuable, because all you ever get to see on the antiques programmes is the old valueable items. They edit out all the old rubbish where people have brought in crappy old ghastly crap from the the loft of their crap houses to show Michael Crapel et al! Put them in their places, I say. Most of them are just after quick earn and wouldn't know a Constable from a Police Constable.

But those people aren't potential collectors, they are just clueless dorks - and they bug every profession, believe me! The worst experience I had of the industry was of a well-known dealer in London where I agreed the price of a proof set on the phone before walking over to pick it up during my lunch break. When I got there, the price had gone up by 50% and the proprietor denied ever having spoken to me! I will leave it to others to guess who I am talking about. In the end though, he was the loser - at the time (no longer, alas) I was in a well-paid job with money to burn, and he ruined his chances of getting any of it.

On the other hand you had dear old souls like Mr Hutchings who operated his small business from the back of an antiques shop in Uxbridge in the 1970s. No question was too silly, and he had all the time in the world it seemed to me. And his friend John Dunkerton (Windsor Coins) who was still operating in 2002 and may still be for all I know. Salt of the earth types, lucky to encounter.
