Hi I have a small Victorian silver coin marked 1 1/2 the date is 1849 - my father left it to me - he said it is a three ha'penny piece. I tried googling it and had no luck- can anyone tell me anything about it?

There weren't any dated 1849. Possibly it is 1843 with the last two digits struck over 34 giving the impression of a 9 on the last digit. Post a picture and it will be possible to say what it is.

Thanks Rob - I expect it is my vision - I looked through a magnifying glass - will scan it and post it when i figure out how to do it.

I hope this is successful- I am assuming it is half of a silver threepenny bit - I have several of those.

Claireanne,

I've attached an image of a Threehalfpence Reverse, 1843/34, is this similar to your coin

Yes I am sure it is the same coin. Are they common?

Fairly common, very short date range,

WIIII 1834, 35, 36 & 37, Victoria 1838, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 60 & 62, there is a proof in the series the very rare 1870.

They were never used/circulated in the UK, only in the colonies of British Guyana, Jamaica, Sri Lanka and Trinidad.

Tony Clayton has a write up and indicative values on his site
