Bolt Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Is this an overstrike 8 over 6? This is a fine coin, the 8 looks odd but would like an opinion as to whether this is an overstrike. Cheers! Quote
RLC35 Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Hi, The pic you have provided does not appear to the the 8 over 6. I have attached a closeup of the 8 over 6 Half Crown (1848) for reference. The 1862 overdate looks the same. You can clearly see the left side of the 6 connecting the top and bottom of the left side of the 8. I hope this helps.Bob C. Quote

Is this just an error of some kind or wear on my coin? The coin is not generally worn and the left side of the 8 does go down in a curve like there is another numeral. Quote
Rob Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 There isn't anything to suggest the 8 is over another character. The shape of the 6 is different for Victorian silver compared to the bronze coinage. The copper 6's are the same shape as the halfcrowns, but the bonze isn't and this would appear as an ascending line across the top loop, through and out the top if over a 6. Quote
RLC35 Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Rob, You are correct about the Bronze 8 over 6 being slightly differant. I just looked in my Gouby book, and it shows the upper partial loop in the upper half of the 8. I had never noticed that before, as being differant. The pic in Gouby's book is not good enough to make a usuable copy for the forum, or I would copy it. The 1862 8 over 6 is listed as "BP-1862D by Gouby.Bob C. Quote
