PINMAN Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Hi guys.I recently acquired this early Victoria Scottish penny token pictured below, and wondered if anyone on here, could point me in the right direction,to any available info on it,and also,if anyone has any idea,as to what the value might be.Any help would be much appreciated. As you can see,my picture taking skills have improved, although i haven't quite reached the David Bailey standard, yet lol. PINMAN Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 Just realised that i've posted this topic in the wrong part of the forum .My apologies for that, please feel free to move it,if you so wish. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Nova Scotia is not Caledonia, i.e. the big peninsular on top of England! Nova Scotia is 'New Scotland', a part of Canada (before they switched over to dollars and cents). Quote
PINMAN Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 Thanks for the info,Chris...although it's probably well known common knowlodge to the vast majority.Geography & history, never have been my strong points.Finding some info on this particular token, will no doubt be much easier now . Quote
Chris Perkins Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Those types exist also with George IV on them (and WmIV??? Not seen one) and also as pennies. Quote
PINMAN Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 I did an image search earlier on,which did bring up another example of this particular token(William IV 1837 if i remember correctly).I didn't really pay all that much attention to it,since i was only trying to find an example of the exact date that i have aquired.I was just hoping to find a little info on it,if possible.I realise that it's probably not going to be worth all that much(especially in such a low grade state),but no doubt that the value, has got to be greater than the 50p that it cost me. Hussulo Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 I dont know much about nova scotia coins/medals but its definitely worth at least 50p. Half the fun is finding more out about coins and tokens you come across. An item like that has a lot of history. Quote

An item like that has a lot of history.Yep,i couldn't agree with you more.I do intend to purchase a decent book at some future point,to assist me with this.I have got this years "Coin Yearbook",but as you probably know, that mainly just covers the mintages and current values, which is obviously handy, but not really everything that i want. There is some other info in it,but nowhere near as much as i'd like.Another part of this hobby that i personally find exciting,is the hunt.Ebay is the easy option(and the expensive one too lol),but isn't nowhere near as much fun,as discovering something good at your local Bootfair or charity shops,even....it just isn't the same,in my opinion. Chris Perkins Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 A Collectors' Coins GB 2007 would be most useful. If you've not seen one before, they really do contain more varieties than any other book (for the last 200+ years of coins). See the Amazon link at the top! Quote

Red Riley Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 A bit out of my area here, but as the Canadian federation was not formed until 1867, it strikes me that in all probability, this coin is not a token at all, but a regular issue. Quote
PINMAN Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 Well i've had a ton of personal stuff to deal with recently(family problems),and that's prevented me from plonking myself down in front of the keyboard, for any real length of time.Hence not having got around to doing any research on this particular token/coin,so far.Hopefully the situation will change real soon.
