Hi guys.

Just wanted to say a hello,to all members of this forum.I've spent the last few days,reading through the different threads within this site,and decided that i'd like to be part of it all,too (a big thanks to Chris,for activating my account).

I'm not a complete newby,when it comes to coin collecting,i was into this hobby as a teenager,too (many many moons ago),but had to sell off my entire collection,since it was the only way,which would enable me to purchase my very first car.

Anyway,glad to be here,and hope to provide some useful posts / threads.

Thanks for your kind welcome.It broke my heart,when i sold off my coin collection as a youngster,but i'd only just passed my driving test,and was extremely eager to get myself a car.....of course,the novelty of it all,lost it's appeal after just a few weeks lol.Needless to say,that i'd not do the same now,if i were faced with the same situation.

I can remember at the time,that a couple of coins shops which i frequently visited,would often have sovereigns,in the £20-£25 price range.....shows you how long ago this was.

Thanks for your welcome,too.My main interest,is in the Victorian era,although the post Victorian stuff,up to and including George VI,also has a certain amount of appeal.I mainly collect pre 47 silver,but am sometimes tempted by some of the rarer copper bits,which become available.

I keep trying to locate some coin shops,which are within driving distance from where i'm located(Sheerness,Kent),but haven't had any joy,so far.Ebay is easy and convenient,but it's so bliming expensive,that i want to find some kind of alternative.

Coins have been one hobby that have never come and gone for me, but many other hobbies are perpetually on the back burner, currently my model railroad is readying for reassembly within the confines of my basement, thence the Wabash Cannonball shall thunder across the 4' x 8 ' once more. My Soviet Russian Air Force has been in mothballs for some time too.

Leaving the hobby was easy,i was young,i'd just passed my test,and i honestly couldn't see any other alternative way,that i'd realistically be able to purchase my first car,other than parting with the entire collection.I was on quite a low income at the time,so attempting to accumulate enough dosh via my wages,was certainly out of the question,it would've taken me eons.

No idea whatsoever,why it took me so long (best part of three decades) to get back into this wonderful hobby,and i can't even place the blame on having kids or getting married,either .

I wouldn't say that coins were a hobby in my teens (the first half of which were in pre-decimal days) so much as a latent interest which never became a reality until many years later. To be honest, I doubt very much if I'd have been able to afford to collect coins in those days. It's not a cheap hobby even now. It's strange isn't it; you splash out on a piece of antique furniture or other such artifact and you can display it for all to see, but we pay substantial amounts of money for little discs of metal which we then lock away.

That is the main drawback of this hobby. Recently I have rekindled my interest in my model railroad. It is time consuming and not really costly after the initial investment. I have my coins in several safe deposit boxes in the bank, where some have remained sight unseen for many years at a time. It gets too hard to appreciate them when you can only look at them on the internet(my website) or bother with all the hassle of looking at them in the bank. It may prevail upon me to sell a lot of them at some point in the future.

The nice thing about the model railroad is I do not have to worry nearly so much about the house being ransacked for it.
