I have a coin from 1584.

Not sure what it is. looks silver.

Might it be worth something?

Posted

Yes, Gerald, it might be worth something but we need more to go off than "1584 looks silver". If you could register and attach a picture, that would be most helpful. Or, if not, a description. It could be:

Fourpence-halfpenny

Twopence-farthing

Shilling

Groat

Halfgroat

Penny

Sixpence

Threepence

Threehalfpence

Threefarthings

Halfpenny

Crown

Halfcrown

As you can see, we need more info

Oh my edit button has gone missing. Anyhow, looking closer at the pictures in Spinks, the only ones I can see dates on are:

Threefarthings

Sixpence

Threepence

So, by process of elimination, I'm quite sure it's one of those

Edit: The button has come back - weird

From looking at http://www.predecimal.com/p5tudor.htm

It would appear that it is a sixpence or a threepence as there is a date on the side of the coin bearing the

coat of arms.

Around the coat of arms side of the coin the letters

POSV I or T

DEV.AD

IVTORE

M.M.EV

Thanks,

Gerard.

I have no digital camera to take a picture of it with.

Approx size in MM would probably be most useful at this stage. It's probably not quite circular, so measure it at the widest point. Most silver Elizabeth I Coins look very similar indeed.

Yes, strange things have been happening with the edit button recently. Mine keeps going missing and sometimes coming back. What's going on?

Gerard. If you got a scanner when you bought your computer, that can be used to get a picture. Scanned pictures can be cropped in something like Paint (ie edited to show mainly the coin itself)

If your coin is 25 mm across, its a sixpence (1/40th of £1), if 20mm, a threepence.

You can obviously read the date, but that gives us little idea of the grade of coin (ie how clear or battered/worn it is). Is the portrait clear? On the side that has no date you should see a head and shoulders and a blob. If the head has clearly got a crown and the blob looks like a Tudor rose it may be worth a few quid (to £30). If you can see the pattern on the dress (for it is Queen Elizabeth I) and details of her hair, could be up to £100.

If neither, it's a nice souvenir!

It's 25mm across.

It is very worn. You can barly make out the queen and tudor rose.

The other side is better but not great either.

It will be a nice thing to keep.

Thanks for your expert advice.

Gerard.
