Isn't the comparison over such an age range of the monarch a bit pointless? Or are you comparing Quality of the artist's reproduction of the real queen at the time?

For instance:-

The reproduction of Churchill on the crown was accurate and conveyed his character but the portrait as a coin subject was abysmal!

Well, I was spoking from a numisamtic-artistic point of view.

I think that on coins a portrait is (or not) "good" for a lot of reasons.

Probably the "realest" is the fourth, but I think that the second as an "I-don't-know-what" that mekes it very good (IMHO).

And I think that nort always on coins a real portrait is the better.

I.G. on Vatican euro coins, the portrait of pope John Paul II was very real, but, perhaps for this reason, I dont' like it.

I can't edit previous message, and there are some mistakes....

The Gillick portrait is weak.

The Machin portrait has some class, even if it only went on decimal coinage.

The Maklouf portrait is pretty good as well, close second.

Rank-Broadley, no comment.

I voted For the Maklouf portrate, by the way!

Rank-Broadley, no comment.

I think we can all pretty much guess where that will end up.

Machin then IRB - don't like the Maklouf 'coupe' at all. (Or is that coupee?) - I just don't think it looks like her at all.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and go for Rank-Broadley. It has a balance of formality and honesty which I don't think we've seen since Wyon's ground-breaking William IV, which has always been a great favourite.

I was told by Graham Dyer that the Queen takes a great personal interest in these matters, and that nothing simply goes through on the nod. On those grounds she presumably wouldn't have accepted the IRB design unless she approved of it.

Gillick I grew up with, but I could never relate it to the person it portrayed. The same is true of Maklouf. I have a soft spot for Machin though. I wonder if the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 will bring a further design.
