I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the stunning find, reported in the Daily Mail yesterday of a Coenwulf gold 'mancus' penny. It is something everyone dreams of! I'm not surprised the museums thought it was a forgery. It is in beautiful condition. :P

It's the first time I've seen the denomination of 'mancus'.

I don't get the Mail.

Was it the same gold mancus sold at Spink in Oct 2004 for £230K ish and bought by Allan Davisson for which he presumably had to get an export licence?

I assume the BM would try to raise funds to buy it. If so it's a pity as they have so many coins that virtually the whole collection is inaccessible to the public because nobody knows what is there and most are locked away for eternity. At least a collector will sell it on in the future so that others can enjoy.

Rob...I noticed a posting on another collector website with a link to an article on this very subject. Looks like the coin is going to stay in the UK.

Yep there was half a page devoted to it in the Telegraph the other week. Not to mention the Metro (ah the Metro, *cue to angelic singing*).

I didn't keep either article though. Don't ask why not because i don't know.
