Guest scut Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 I have been researching the short cross penny. I would like some help regarding the dating of the coins. How do you tell what grade the coins are and if it is a grade 4 for example how can you decide if it is a Henry I or a John. I understand all Short Cross Pennies have the same words struck on the obverse and the monneyer and mint on the reverse. But this is all so how are they dated please?Thanks. Quote
krasnaya_vityaz Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Good reference material, Seaby, or Coincraft are helpful with this, there are nuances in the lettering styles etc which determine which are said to determine under which monarch the coins were issued. But you must appreciate that there is much conjecture here, since these coins were minted 700-800 years ago, and so far they are silent on the matter, and record keeping from that time is rather skint. So often times it is a situation of best guess. Quote

Peter Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Yep...Very difficult to grade....the Yanks grading system can't handle it because each coin is individual.Its all down to eye appeal/roundness of flan/depth of strike/no clipping etc etc.You really can't categorize it.Spinks pricing is only a guide,Good hammered examples between F & EF will always demand a premium.As struck can only grade F sometimes....that is the beauty of hammered.
