P5120896.JPG.80dd7f0a147c7e197197ea1a5ce0e1ca.JPGHi,

I'm a new here, but I love old coins, and my favourite of them all is the St George and the Dragon Crown Coin designed by Benedetto Pistrucci .

I picked one up the other day that looks a bit weird to me, it is in good shape but has clearly been cleaned/polished in the past :(, but it's so much nicer than all the others I have.

However it appears to have a mirror like finish and the helmet tassels all appear doubled, and the cloak edge and parts around his neck also have very fine double edges. I'll post some pictures that try to show it.

Is it just a particularly good strike?

Try to take some clear photos of both sides of the coin, it’s difficult to comment on the images you give. There are some very good Chinese replicas available now and looking at the finish we need to rule those out first.

Doubling in the strike would be a possibility, if we are dealing with the genuine article.

The double plume 1887 crown represents about 5% of the population. It is recorded and mentioned in a paper submitted to BNS blog but not yet published. Several of them were in The Thorburn Collection sold by Sovereign Rarities 23rd. Sep. 2025. notably lot 81
