Coin#addict Posted yesterday at 12:35 PM Posted yesterday at 12:35 PM Hi guys I have this Celtic looking coin which weighs 1.2 grams. I know absolutely nothing about them but I was told few years back it was a fake. It was purchased in a joblot of metal detecting finds, over 100 different coins that were all legitimate, this one was on the fringes of his photos and blurry, so he wasn't touting it for the auction. Just double checking, because if it is fake, someone has went to a lot of trouble surely to make just this one, as I cannot find another identical example online?? Thank you ☺️ Quote
Peckris 2 Posted yesterday at 01:09 PM Posted yesterday at 01:09 PM Here is a gold coin with a similar obverse: https://www.baldwin.co.uk/product/atrebates-regini-eppillus-gold-quarter-stater/ I'm afraid my knowledge of these is almost zero. 1 Quote
Ukstu Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago (edited) I personally think it is fake. Each side is from a different coin which should be gold. I can't find anything like it in Spink or Van Ardsell. I think it's a fantasy piece. One side appears to be similar to the one linked above by Peckris and one side is trying to be this but doing a bad job in my opinion. https://en.numista.com/459267 Edited 22 hours ago by Ukstu Typo 1 Quote

Thanks bud, my knowledge of them has been searching for this type for 2 years with absolutely no joy. Quote

Thing is, even if it was a fantasy piece, why isn't there another one the same like? I went over it today with the metal detector and it came up silver signal. Quote
Ukstu Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago (edited) I can't answer those questions. My gut feeling is its not genuine. It just looks really crude to me. How big is it ? I've weighed my cranborne chase silver stater which is a fairly large coin for a celtic coin and its 5.12 grams. My smaller Iceni unit weighs 1.15 grams. To give you some perspective of size I've put the Iceni unit next to a 2023 5p. Best advice i can give you is measure it , weigh it and take some high quality images of it and send them to Chris Rudd. His contact address should be somewhere on his website. Google will get you there. Edited 18 hours ago by Ukstu Image added Quote
Unwilling Numismatist Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago (edited) or liz@celticcoins.com - She'll be a good resource on it too. EDIT: I'm going to sit on the fence with the caveat: I think it should be properly appraised by a professional. If the internet cannot provide a similar example, it's either a contemporary forgery or real. It looks struck, not cast and that would entail quite a lot of work in order to produce a fake which would not have any intrinsic or implied value without any solid provenance. It is not impossible for it to be a new discovery. Good luck. Edited 1 hour ago by Unwilling Numismatist 1 Quote
