Victoria Six Pence -1st portrait; 1st type

the date hasn't been dinged, it looks close up as its deformed, non committed to be a 5 or 6 ( which is a ball ache when trying to get things in date order !?!?😒)

on the obverse there's a ghost  to the side of the letters G:F

opinions / views welcome.......

It is definitely 1859 (1839 has the 3 in a very different font to this as does 1869 with its 6) and the date has been dinged - a gouge upwards from south -west to north-east as it were, of the 5. Zoom in on the 5 and it's very clear. The "ghosts" on the letters you mention are just signs of letter repair on the die. Nothing numismatically significant here, sadly.

Aha, I think I pencilled it in as 1959 but needed to be correct, my loop is strong enough to pick out the obvious dings and wear,  the forums partly to blame and I'm now looking for errors that do occur... interesting to learn that this the "ghost" are due to a repair to a die..... for me an interesting find.  👍

Agree to all, 1859. Obverse 2, with 2nd I in BRITANNIAR to gap.

hello Bruce. many thanks for the input... can you elaborate more in regards to with 2nd I in BRITANNIAR to gap. I'm not sure what this means,  many thanks "H"

The second I in BRITANNIAR vertical centre line is pointing to a gap between two teeth rather than at a tooth. Suggest you buy a copy of Davies where all will be explained, plus all the other pointings for all denominations of silver (including Cu-Ni) from 1816 to 1980.

Sorry, only read the message now, and yes Rob explained the obverse 2.
