The Coin Realm Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 Hello Everyone! I hope you are doing well. A couple days ago, a metal detectorist was selling a few coins when I saw relatively big celtic coin in amongst them and despite not knowing a lot about celtic coinage, I purchased it (I paid £15 for it, merely a punt on my part). It is roughly 1.5cm across, and weighs around 4 grams, and feels very heavy for a coin of it's size. It does have a very thin harline crack as you see in the photos but feels very complete and stable. The more I look at it, the more interesting it seems. At first I thought it was made of silver but the more I look, the more I see a gold tone. This got me thinking, the weight...the colour...maybe a pale gold stater? Probably my imagination running wild however it looks very interesting and I be extremely grateful if someone with more knowledge would take a look and let me know what they think. Even if it's just silver or a mix of metals, I would love to know more about it, e.g period, tribe etc...does it look authentic? Thank you all so much in advance! Look forward to hearing from you. Kindest Regards Quote
Iannich48 Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Hi there, I am no expert about these coins, but if that is verdigree, then it is at least partially copper, so probably not gold. 1 Quote
Martinminerva Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 With the splits in the outer and the copper core showing through, this appears to be a contemporary copy/forgery which would have been clad in a more precious metal but with a base core to resemble a full piece. As long as there has been currency there has been forgery!! 1 Quote
jelida Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 It appears to have been cast in a strip mould, in the same fashion as Potin coins, though I do not recognise it as a British Potin, so if genuine probably Continental Iron Age. More likely a high tin bronze, which can be quite silvery, than gold or silver. Jerry 1 Quote
