Coins Mounted in Dish - But How...?

I've come across this remarkable dish that looks like it has what would've been an impressive coun collection embedded in it (sadly polished smoothly...).

Does anyone know how they were set in it and whether the coins could ever be removed?

Wasn't something similar sold at auction (St James?) several years ago now?

Perhaps! I don't remember any similar lots and couldn't find any from a quick search though.

Love it! The individual coins are no longer collector's items but the dish on the whole is an item of beauty and rarity.

I've seen an old piece of silverware with a gold lining and a sovereign mounted at the bottom, although it was just the one coin.
