Mumra Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 (edited) Ok so I've not been able to fully work this one out so I thought I would throw it out there so somone can help maybe . So basically what's this?: 1867 shilling with an elephant on Victorias head :s ! https://imgur.com/gallery/rxoNE Hopefully you can see it :s . Just a random artistic thing? Fits the head so well though and is it Victoria head 2 or 3? Interesting coin . Edited October 14, 2017 by Mumra 1 Quote

Mumra Posted October 15, 2017 Author Posted October 15, 2017 Ah ok so the engraving is done directly on the coin not stamped I guess. There's a few odd markings as well like on her neck and the other side...I think yes some will like others hate Thanks! Quote

Ukstu Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 (edited) Maybe something to do with the Empire. The ear on the Elephant suggests its an Indian Elephant. Indian troops were enlisted in the british army so I'd hazard a guess its probably the work of a bored indian solider. To some indians the elephant is a sacred animal. They worship them as one of their gods. (Ganesh) The indians had a major rebellion in 1857 against british rule. So it could also be the 10 year anniversary of that. Quite often defacement of crown coins is done for political reasons. Edited October 17, 2017 by Ukstu 1 Quote
