Hi.

I,ve recently been thinking of adding some half/full sovereigns to my portfolio. The problem is that i,ve been reading about them on - line and there seems to be a lot of good looking fakes going about. I purchase most of my coins on ebay, so you can imagine its a bit of a minefield!! In fact i seen a 2013 sovereign being sold earlier for £57.( It had the description. ...2013 proof gold sovereign? Not sure if its gold...blah blah). I,ve seen these listings before and i steer clear of them. Is there a website or a book i can purchase that states what gold sovereigns have been copied?

Hi Declan,

Buy them from a reputable bullion dealer. If there's something particular you're after Bullion By Post sell specific dates and mints. I've always found them to be very good and have had batches of sovereigns from them which, although sold as 'best value', have included Ed VII and Geo V coins in EF condition.

No. The list would be constantly changing in any case. Wean yourself off eBay. You recognise there is a problem with fakes on eBay, so it isn't a great leap into the dark to leave a site which frankly doesn't give a s**t if listings are genuine or fake and try to strike up a relationship with a few dealers. You will almost certainly forego the ability to acquire a coin worth a hundred quid for a fiver, but you will have a no-quibble return guarantee in 99% of cases. Coins are effectively on approval.

I can recommend a few trusted sellers on Facebook as well who only deal in sovereign's and are often below the bullion by post prices only being a few points above spot for moden bullion.

I would avoid buying sovereigns on e bay. It's not trustworthy, and you can easily get ripped off by sharks, unless you really know your stuff, and even then you can come unstuck.

With gold, go to established dealers, or reputable auction houses.
