1762 George III Unknown coin.

Hi again.

Can anyone give me any information on this old worn George III 1762 coin? Weight and dimensions roughly as a threepence, probably silver? The nearest i could get was a quarter guinea. Was this possibly be a fake coin from back then?

Yep. That's wrong too.

Looks as if its been gold gilt at one stage. Most likely a fake yes and not a very good one. 

Counterfeiting was rife in those days. 

Bung it on ebay if your not interested in keeping it , there's a market for contemporary Georgian counterfeits.

Looks like it's trying to be a guinea or half guinea. It might be the light on the photograph or it may be that the slight gold tones are the remnants of gilding. Interesting but not a genuine coin.

The contemporary fakes are usually easy to spot nowadays but back in the day when they where new and shiny you could of got caught out quite easily in a dimly lit tavern. 

This is a brass shilling i own. At one stage it would of been silver washed.
