Blank Slate Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Hello, looking for a bit of guidance, knowing nothing about coins Clearing out an old desk, found what seems to be a George III 1804 dollar. It looks like all the examples googled, is a bit worn, but, unlike all the photos I've seen, it has "M C" stamped on the side with king's head. M one side of the head, C the other. The letters are ridged in the same way as the band that says "five shillings" is on the other side. Might it be real? thanks for any thoughts Quote
Paulus Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Welcome to the Forum BS, probably just stamped with someone's initials post-production, but pictures will help? Quote
Blank Slate Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 Is there a knack to uploading photos? I've shrunk them to tiny 26 kb each, but it still says I'm limited to 500 kb Quote
Blank Slate Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 Cracked it. The coin is grubby - what's the best thing to clean it with? The front and back are offset - if you hold it with the King's head vertical, and then flip the coin through 180 deg, the 1804 is shifted about 5 degrees anti-clockwise. thanks for any thoughts Quote
coinkat Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 (edited) Looks okay in terms of being genuine. I would not attempt to improve this coin based on its appearance. It looks original and will have greater appeal if it remains that way. The M C was engraved possibly as a gift to someone. Interesting . Value is a bit of a question mark because of the engraving. I suspect there are still some collectors that would be willing to pay a fair price for this- just not sure what the range would be... Perhaps £75-100? Edited April 9, 2017 by coinkat 1 Quote
azda Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 Its a part of the history of the coin, perhaps it's for a loved one, it's definately contemporary to the coin and worth holding onto just for the history and the feel of history 1 Quote
Ukstu Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 (edited) Seen a few of these on ebay with initials etched into them. Usually sell for around £85 mark. Last one that i saw had MW etched into it. Don't try to clean it. It looks great. A really nice coin. ? Edited April 10, 2017 by Ukstu Quote
