Nick1697 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I noticed that this Cnut penny has been sold by multiple sellers within a few months. Something about it looks off to me but I want to see of you agree. I am asking because the current seller of this coin has a few items I am interested in and if this Cnut penny is fake then I don't want to risk the possibility of the others being fake as well. Here is the original listing. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/King-Cnut-AR-Penny-/131854151266?hash=item1eb31eae62%3Ag%3ADpoAAOSwmtJXaArw&nma=true&si=ZI88snN6Q3P6cqUheFmSmy3Z7ws%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 The second listing, also by a seller in cyprus, I assume it is the same seller under a different name. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Silver-Penny-King-Cnut-Saxon-Viking-/172266528678?hash=item281be29fa6%3Ag%3AhMIAAOSwH6lXRGF2&nma=true&si=ZI88snN6Q3P6cqUheFmSmy3Z7ws%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Finally the current seller. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/302035335254?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT What do you all think? DaveG38 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I wouldn't know if the item is fake or not, just by looking at it, although it does look iffy. The multiple sellers surely is the giveaway. In my view there's no way this coin has hopped around like this on ebay. More likely they are separate coins and each is a copy of an original. If it was me, I'd avoid the seller. Quote
seuk Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 He's got another one...: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Anglo-Saxon-Viking-Penny-king-Cnut-/131898733472?hash=item1eb5c6f3a0:g:H~oAAOSwhOdXo1Z Quote
seuk Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Different coins but probably just as 'valuable': http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Anglo-Saxon-Viking-Penny-king-Cnut-/131898733996?hash=item1eb5c6f5ac:g:gvkAAOSwCfdXo1cFhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ancient-European-Anglo-Saxon-Edward-Silver-Coin-Penny-Vikings-FREE-SHIPPING-/122070509040?hash=item1c6bf825f0:g:kD8AAOSwSgJXNkhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ancient-European-Anglo-Saxon-Silver-Coin-Penny-of-Ethelred-II-Vikings-FREE-SHIP-/122070513193?hash=item1c6bf83629:g:s0IAAOSwtnpXoRXS Quote
Nick1697 Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 I agree with the Cnut being of the same batch, though I dont think there is anything wrong with the last two you posted, the Edward the Elder and Aethelred II. I could be wrong through. Quote
seuk Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I would be surprised if those are genuine - the seller has sold several forgeries of Norwegian coins of a similar thin lettered design. Quote
Nick1697 Posted August 9, 2016 Author Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks for the heads up, I didnt realise they had sold fake Norwegian coins. Therefore it is quite possible these are fake too. Quote
Nick1697 Posted August 9, 2016 Author Posted August 9, 2016 Now I am worried that my Edward the Elder penny is fake. It was bought from the same seller. Though no one expressed any views that it could be fake when I posted it in the "Coin aquisition of the week......." thread. What do you think? Quote
seuk Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 It has the same thin lettering so I would suspect it to be another fake - Also I don't like the overall design but as I have no knowledge of these coins you should find one who is familiar with the series. Here's a link to the norwegian thread (its in norwegian but I guess a google translate will work) http://www.samlerforum.no/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14145 Quote
Nick1697 Posted August 9, 2016 Author Posted August 9, 2016 Sorry to keep adding to this but this is a side by side comparison between the Edward the Elder Penny listed on ebay and another penny I found that is currently listed by The Classical Numismatic Group. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=318831 They both have the same blundered E of REX and the same E in LIOFHELM. Does this help to confirm its authenticity or condemn it as a fake? Quote
seuk Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I like the bottom coin much better as all details are much bolder. The two coins clearly share the same die design - however they can't be from the same die unless it was reengraved. Fx.the lines of the bust and around the bust are different. Quote

The last link was ended early which then is fair to assume someone has emailed the seller to tell him/her it's a fake, it does look rather soapy though which is generally consistent with fakes. Quote
Nick1697 Posted August 10, 2016 Author Posted August 10, 2016 Do you now if dies of this era were ever re-engraved? It just looks so similar. For it to be fake, the forger would have had to have access to this coin on the left. I can only fine one other example from Liofhelm and it is badly damaged. Yes I emailed the seller and they said that they would end it just to be sure. They said they would take it to a local coin shop for further advise. Quote
seuk Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 It's quite possible - but as I said I'm no expert on this issue. My guess is that you don't need the actual coin to make a die. You'll probably just need the dimensions + a good picture. Quote
