VickySilver Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 OK, DNW had an 1888 (not 1888/7 overdate as is the more common bit) yesterday. Despite my nomen, I haven't really kept track of these as I don't care for the Jub head & still find them ridiculous, never mind the rarity in higher preservation of the 1889 small head shilling and the evidently supreme rarity of the 1893 Jub sixpence in top condition. How rare are these? A quick scan of ebay showed a couple of examples and they are hard to tell on more worn specimens there - the 8's look different on the non-overdate to me.... Any other comments?? Rob Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Guesstimate of 5-10% but no more, maybe less. It's a good job the date isn't rare otherwise you might struggle to pick one up. As I recall, it took me a good year or two to find an acceptable example. Quote
mrbadexample Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I thought I had one of each but closer inspection shows both to be 8/7. Quote
VickySilver Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 ESC has them at R3 which IMO may be a bit of a stretch. I do have one but the question just came to mind. Quote

Hi I have just been reading this thread and am interested to know how easy is it to tell the difference as I am collection an 1888 set at the moment. Anyone have both and can post pictures of the difference please. I have bought the 1888/7 from Colin Cook just would like to see what the differences are. Quote
Rob Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 There is a picture of them side by side somewhere on the forum, but I can't remember where I posted it. I'll have to see if I can find the original. Maybe 5-10% are straight 8s. They aren't that common. Quote
UPINSMOKE Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Hi Rob thanks for that. I will now have to check mine and see if I can spot the over strike. I may post a picture just to verify it with you. Quote
