Master Jmd Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I have never seen a 1988 pound coin yet, it is anoying me that this is the only gap in my £ collection Quote
Sylvester Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I'm only keeping it until a decent specimen comes my way. You'll be waiting a fair while then...I'm still looking. I spent about 4 of them a few weeks ago because i had nothing else left to spend and i had to pay the train fare somehow.I think i've got 2 more lying around somewhere, i can only find one but i've got an idea where the other should be. Quote
Sylvester Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 Yep found it... i thought it was there.I had six, now down to two. It's very very rare occurence you'll get two in change at any one time. Although i've spent them two at a time.I wonder if the 2004 issue's going to be like this? A no show date... Quote
Millimoo Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 Hello to All!Just joined, interested mostly in Ancients, especially Biblical/Judean, Temple and Architectural reverses (mostly Roman Provincials) and Alexandrian Tetradrachm.Dave, UK Quote
william Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Hi Millimoo. Welcome to the forum, although i don't know a thing about ancient coins. My £ collections going well btw, i've got all the types, just waiting for ones in better conditions... Quote
tubandpud Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 Welcome Millimoo,I'm fairly new to the forum as well. Very new to coin collecting, but don't really intend going back as faras you. You might have been looking into the forum and learnt about some of these guys. They are agreat bunch, very helpful if you get stuck. I'm learning from them all the time !! Quote
Master Jmd Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Very new to coin collecting, but don't really intend going back as far as you. How far do you plan to go back? Quote
Millimoo Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Thanks for the warm welcome! Are there many ancient collectors here? I like to call myself a novice, been collecting for about a year and a half.If I have learned anything in that time, it’s that I will never know it all, so I'll probably remain a novice!I'm still spending more on books than coins, but the wants list for coins is now much larger than the wants list for books, although David Sear is supposed to be launching volume 3 of his Roman books in May, and Ivan Varbanov the first of 3 English Language books on Roman Provincials early next year. The only modern coins that have caught my eye so far are a couple of sets from Gibraltar, one on the labours of Hercules and the other the Seven Wonders of the World. Does anyone have them or seen them?Dave Quote
Emperor Oli Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Does anyone have them or seen them?Linky Quote
tubandpud Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 Thanks for the 'Linky' Emperor Oli - very interesting.Master Jmd - I'm only going back to 1821 (one or two coins before that date), but Ancient is beyond me,although I can appreciate the beauty of the coins. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Thanks for the 'Linky' Emperor Oli - very interesting.Master Jmd - I'm only going back to 1821 (one or two coins before that date), but Ancient is beyond me,although I can appreciate the beauty of the coins. You say that now, but it is quite natural to move further back as you gain confidence. And many ancient coins are not expensive. Quote
tubandpud Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 Yes, Chris, I've just been looking at your Roman Coins for Sale - not as expensive as I thought !! Quote
Millimoo Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I guess there are many reasons behind collecting coins, but mine was firstly a love of History. My first coin was a very cheap Antoninus Pius Denarius that cost me less that £10. It’s still one of my favourite coins, but in reality, nothing special, other than to me! Next came 100 uncleaned Roman coins, and the delights of uncovering history under the dirt. The thrill of seeing a coin that has not seen a human face for 1700+ years is quite something! After that I just bought anything and everything, just enjoying the thrill of a new coin in my hand. Slowly I realise that I couldn’t afford EVERYTHING and that I had better specialise in SOMETHING! I chose Biblical (history angle), Architectural (lots to go at and interesting to me) and Alexandrian Tetradrachms (Egyptian, Greek writing, Roman coins, Romano-Egyptian Gods etc. - And still fairly inexpensive. I still have designs on a 12 Caesars collection from Alexandria, but I think only 10 or so are available!).Nice link too, thanks!Dave Quote
Sylvester Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Another one in it for the history, i'm in the medieval period myself! Quote
Millimoo Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Hi Sylvester,I could get interested in medieval coins, great cauldron of history bubbling over, and some nice coins too! What do you collect? I have a few earlier coins, Saxon Styca and Sceatta Porcupine Types, but only a few, and not the best. I was thinking about collecting really old pennies, but I already collect too much, and decided to wait a bit.Could you post a picture of your favourite coin?Dave Quote
Geordie582 Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 WARNING! Hammered coins are addictive! And there is no known cure. Quote
Master Jmd Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 (edited) WARNING! Hammered coins are addictive! And there is no known cure. One of the reasons why i will hopefully not go any further back than 1613 with my collection Edit: Oh, and welcome Millimoo Edited December 22, 2004 by Master Jmd Quote
tubandpud Posted December 22, 2004 Author Posted December 22, 2004 Sorrym Millimoo, all those coins are 'gobledy gook' to me, but DO sound interesting - perhaps, ONE DAY ??!! Quote
Millimoo Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Hi tubandpud,The vast majority of coins are 'gobledy gook' to me too! What do you collect? There is quite a nice Sceatta Porcupine Type on ebay:-http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3948207491&rd=1I'll try and do a picture of mine at some point, but I would guess that there are better examples with other Forum members.Dave Quote
Sylvester Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Some of my medieval coins;King John penny Quote
Master Jmd Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I prefer your King Henry III Long Cross penny out of them three Quote
Sylvester Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I kinda like all three but all for totally different reasons. The Edward I penny was the first hammered coin i ever got. The Henry III i just like the look of it. As for John, well i've just given this one away to a friend (i have a better example now, so the old one was surplus), anyhow i liked that cos the moneyor was a guy Simon of Canterbury.Of all things, i thought ha i knew i'd get my name on a coin one day!
