richtips86 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Hi guys, what literature would you recommend regarding hammered coinage to cover the reigns of the Normans through to Plantagenets? I've seen North but is that a good reference point? I've read Chris' England's Striking History but would like something a bit more detailed nowCheers Quote
Rob Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 If you want detailed info then you have to accumulate a large number of papers/books, each covering a short period in time. Books tend to be written about a reign or a type, so a suitable example of one publication for the period you are interested in would be D F Allen's book on the Tealby coinage published in 1951. Won't come cheap though. If you look through the intro sections in Spink it lists the useful references for that particular period. The lists aren't exhaustive, but are a good start. Quote
Matteo95 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 what type of book do you search ? if you want a catalog with all varieties and rarities I think North's books are the best... While if you look for a book about coinage history I can raccomend this book http://www.greenlightpublishing.com/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=18099860 .. I think it is a valid point of start . An other exellent book is " English coins " by Lord Stewartby , published by Spink ... very detailed and usefull ( it is one of my preferit about engish coins ) .. but I think it is a little more difficult to understand for a beginner and there isn't the Normann coinage ....of course there are more specific and detailed books for determined periods or mints ...like Robin J. Eaglen's books for the mint of Bury St. Edmund or the North collection for the edwardian pennies .... Quote
