Ah I meant D&H 364... Does 361 typically have this edge inscription ? Otherwise everything seems to match up.

Hi all ! Wondering if anyone here who's more familiar with this series might be able to give me a hand on this...probably a pretty basic question ! I have a 1789 Druid halfpenny which I think is D&H 394 because the obverse has 25 acorns and the 9 of the date is below the H of "THE". What is the standard edge inscription for this issue ? Mine is "PAYABLE IN ANGLESEY LONDON OR LIVERPOOL . X ."

Impossible to tell if worn, toned, cleaned and retoned or worn, toned, worn, retoned. In the absence of any tell-tell signs like directional hair lining on the high surfaces might as well believe the latter.

Maybe we could do with state mandated coffee prices like in Italy...I enjoy my €0.80 espressos...less so at £5 as charged in London nowdays

Yeah, I'd ID as 10cf4 then - working with the plate coin in Spink and https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/edwardian-Pennies/Edwardian Pennies P1.htm Probably worth getting a second opinion as I'm not much of an expert on these - used to collect Edward I pennies but was going by class/mint rather than sub-classes - most of my examples long sold.

I would say this is a 10cf4 - right hand fleur of crown is hooked and the left hand arrow ornament inclines to the right. What's the mint ?

Probably worth noting though that during the late 17th - early 18th century I believe there was a fair bit of circulation of Dutch copper coinage in the South of England given that the farthing was a bit impractical as the smallest denomination - I think this started during the tin coinage.

Interesting ! I've never seen one quite that worn. Suspect it probably did circulate throughout the 30s although the 0.500 silver always seemed to have worn quite badly. It's possible that in some areas of the country these crowns were readily accepted as currency because there was a fair bit of 0.925 silver going around, including Victorian crowns. It's hard to believe that the really basal state old head crowns got that much wear in before 1920. I imagine the sterling disappeared from circulation faster some places than others. Reminded of the story of English and Italian travelers in rural 1830s Spain - they received 16th century and even the odd Islamic or Roman copper coin instead of contemporary 1 maravedi pieces in change; there was a tacit assumption that any old copper coin was roughly worth a maravedi !

You might want to look at R. Ingram's current list and the catalog for the DNW sale on 5-6 June - both have some decent examples of modern British errors at reasonable prices/estimates.

I think there was some circulation of Wreath crowns. Hard to believe that all the VFish examples were pocket pieces. In the end the idea was to give them as Christmas gifts, and they had a fair bit of spending power. Same with the 1935 Rocking Horse crowns, which turn up pretty low grade occasionally.

Yeah, that's what happened. I bought it as the regular type, and knew this one was rare ! But as a rather generalist collector of 18th century tokens I'd never bothered looking at the price lists for the variety - didn't account for the American market Think I'll be consigning this to Baldwins... Regarding the grading I'll take your word for it - thought I might be a touch better given the clearer legend, but I think the net grade is probably around there given the planchet chip and the rather subpar eye appeal.

Wow at the Sheldon scale pricing. My example looks better than that Fine 15. Is this seriously a £5000+ token ? I paid three figures for it and knew I was getting a bargain but I assumed it was worth £500 or so.

Agreed on the bagmarks - I like the coin posted here but the marks on the rim are a distraction to me - also is that a little bit of wear on George's cheek ? Still well worth the money paid.

I have finally acquired a 4 rosette reverse type of the George Washington North Wales halfpenny - the first one I have ever had the opportunity to buy. A good description of this token can be found here. Sadly not a particularly pretty piece, especially with the obverse die flaws. According to what I've read the reverse "sixfoils" have six leaves on this type just as on the more common two sixfoil variety. On mine they appear to have five leaves Does anyone have a good quality photo of this type or an auction catalog reference ? Wondering if there was a third reverse die.

5 years and over 100% increase in price. Really don't see the appeal of spending 100k on an 1819 sovereign in circulated condition. I'd much rather have a William IV crown or a top grade 5 guinea if I had to chose from the British rarities. Just out of interest, my 1972 Seaby catalog lists this coin at £750 in fine. That's roughly £10,000 corrected for inflation. If this does sell for £100k that's an impressive appreciation in value. The hammered rarities have not fared so well. The Matilda penny is priced in at £425 in Fine in 1972 - whereas the last one I remember at auction went for just over £1000 if I recall correctly.

Is it possible this is a shill purchase ? With PayPal Credit or just a credit card linked to your PayPal it's not as if you actually need £900 to make the transaction. And I've heard of people opening PayPal accounts with prepaid cards and all sorts of other such shenanigans to bypass the one user one account rule.

No problem - glad we've got an attribution. I hadn't considered that it could have been a debased issue ! I always think the Barcelona series would be lovely to collect. The busts and designs stay very crude well into the 18th century...and there are some large silver denominations, although they are very rare generally.

I note this is listed in Spink, with prices suggesting it's extremely rare. Has an example come up for sale at auction or otherwise in the past decade or so ? It would be interesting to see a photo but I don't know where to look given Google's failed me.

Looks like a coin of Aragon, Barcelona mint (the central B on the reverse cross and the alternating three pellets/annulets in quarters suggests this). 1g weight would make it a quarter croat (full croat is roughly 4 grams), which accords with the size. Not sure of the monarch but from the obverse legend and portrait I'd guess John II ? Next step to identify would be to find a decent catalog of these issues. This is a rare denomination and rather an exciting little find! (If I'm right of course...I've little experience with Spanish coinage).

Interesting. That's obviously a different die to either coin showed here - the 4 has a rightmost serif.
