Hi, i found this coin but im a bit suspicious about it. 1. its on polish ebay 2. seller has 5-10 coins from all from different countries almost all of them in EF+ (i guess:) Have a look please and tell me what you think. Thanks

That 1820 is a clear VF I'd say - a nice coin. You could do a lot worse than major on halfcrowns - as long as you don't go in for date runs, they will be generally cheaper than crowns, but are still a good size for seeing detail. For types : going forward, there are Victorian Young Head where you should avoid anything before 1874 in a good grade as they will empty your wallet! One from 1874 - 1887 in GVF should be your target (unless you can afford to bump up to EF?) Victoria Jubilee Head : 1887 in EF up to BU Victoria Old Head : 1893 in EF or better Edward VII (difficult reign) : 1902 is far and away the most affordable George V .925 silver : 1915, 16, or 18 minimum EF George V .500 silver : 1920 or 1923, but minimum EF as the head flattens very quickly on that type George V M.E. : 1927 George V new reverse issue : 1928, 29, or 36 in AUNC or better George VI .500 silver : 1944, 45, or 46 in BU George VI CuNi : 1948 BU George VI last issue : 1949 is arguably the easiest Elizabeth II : 1953 BU Elizabeth II 2nd type : 1966 or 1967 in "Gem BU"! Oh, I forgot to mention the other 'machine age' types you don't have: George III 'Bull Head' : minimum VF George III Small Head : ditto George IV 2nd type : 1823 VF or better George IV 3rd type : 1826 VF or better Those are the main types to collect, and the easiest dates to find. Does the same apply to shillings?

auction has just finished and i bought it for £7 inc delivery. Just wondering it says Ag999 on it and i found no info about them being made in silver. Not even one photo etc. Anyway thanks for all your help

Yes i bought a scale on ebay couple of days ago, should get it this week. All the others sovereigns i have are cgs slabbed and only one more young head and all the details look the same. You see the pictures i took: first obverse, then i turn it around 180 degrees and took the picture of the reverse and as you can see its a bit off. Thats the only thing. All the rest is ok i guess. Will check the weight soon:) BTW sorry for my english... its frustrating when im trying to explain something and it doesnt work...

Hi, i just realised that one of my sovereigns is a bit funny... its one of them coin alignment sovereigns but obverse/reverse is not 180 degrees but more like 200-210 degrees(or 150-160:) thas that mean its a fake or is it just a mint error os something? sorry for poor pictures but thats the best i can do with my camera. Ive got last 2 or 3 Collectors Coins GB, same with Coin yearbooks. Guide to Grading British Coins and one Coin monthly yearbook from 1968:) And many Coin News magazines... Now after i read those and this Forum archives, seen thousands of coins on ebay and dealers' websites and spent couple grand on some rubish coins from farthings to sovereigns i decided i like 19th/early 20th century silver the most. That made me realise that i should read more books first. So i need something specific about english silver before i start spending money again Ah, and whats the best place to buy them? eBay? Thanks

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum but ive been checking this website for couple of years. I have a quick question. I buy silver 50p coins from Royal Mint. Theyve been sending me one every month (at least they supposed to) and i have 15 att the moment. Couple days ago ive noticed that the older ones have brown spots on them and one or two are quite bad. I never opened a capsule and i store them all in a box. So, my question is am i doing something wrong or is it Royal Mints fault and i can complain about it? And get it exchanged for example? Thanks
