Welcome to our hobby.. it is a mad oul world, and something that will grip you for life! As for questions etc.. if you ever feel that you have run out of them, you have left the hobby.. we are always questioning and debating, it is half the fun!

Well if he is going to offer a full refund.. surely that makes it ok this time? I don't know.. we need people we can trust, and that group, despite the widening interest in our hobby, seems to be getting smaller..

So something using aluminium, baking soda and salt? Or is it a commercial product? The reason I am asking is that I have used said ingredients before for silver spoons etc, albeit very sparingly and for minimal times.

Someone paid £258 for it.. the reason for good feedback is simple.. those buying it believe what he writes, and are happy to use the providence for their new collection. What is it he is doing to the coins? Electro? Vinegar? Alcohol? I suppose I am asking what dipping is really..

Welcome to our world.. well.. the short answer is.. yes. If they are seen to be worth something, someone somewhere will attempt it. As for value, and I stand to be corrected here, I believe that contemporary forgeries have a value, and I certainly know of people out there who would specialise in these. Modern ones? They are just made to rip people off. All my opinion of course.

Nightmare.. now this is going on my list of 'wants'.. and of course, when I get our one, I'll have to have the other UK ones.. grrr! .. I love it really

Well let me tell the variables involved in MY solution: • 15 different layouts minimum, from main data entry, to printed labels, to values calculator, to history of coin prices, to locations, etc etc • sets of related tables • a table for "coins in sets" • a table to analyse and break down auction lots • a values calculator that has to determine the correct % increase for a coin that falls 'between grades' • Spink values input table • historic (Seaby) values input tables • a pictures database • a 'retired coins' table, linked to the main database so I can interrogate it at will • purchase and sale details So you see, 'one size fits all' wouldn't fit me! I was being a bit tongue in cheek there.. I'm an eclectic collector, and so any given 'system' would probably fall down somewhere with me.

I really don't know. I use a custom-built app I designed in FileMaker Pro. Other members use Excel or Access or similar. The question with off-the-peg solutions to something as esoteric as collecting, is "how flexible is it? Will I be able to expand it as & when my needs change?" Something that is perfect for one collector may be near to useless for another. That is kind of why I was asking... it seems that given all the tangents we tend to take in regards to our hobby, a 'one size fits all' should be possible. A template for each coin, that can be slotted into a main category, sub cat, sub sub cat etc.. something like the way different species are labeled. It looks a mess, but it is an 'orderly' mess and readable/understandable to those who need/want to know.

So bloody rare that I have NEVER even seen nor heard of one!!!

Slabbing is one of those things I am so on the fence about.. basically, and I don't want to offend, I have no faith in the US ones, and that lends me to not have faith full stop.. but, and this is a big but.. some coins I really don't want to be ruined/hurt, and so slabbing seems like a good idea. Sorry for the digression folks.

My collecting has always been coincidental... Only now, after 20 odd years, have I even thought of of looking beyond Belfast, and thinking about going for specific coins. To me it has, and is, all about having that wee bit of history in my hand, and talking to me younger (and older) friends and family about the times and people of the coins life. Little works of art. As long as I can keep that balance, even though actively 'looking' now, I will be a happy AmNum for the rest of my days.

Sorry for the gravedig, but I have just come across a Guernsey £1 coin, with flowers on one side, and the crest of Guernsey on the other. It is smaller that the normal £1, and feels a bit lighter. Any ideas? I'll be keeping it anyway, just because I have never seen nor heard of one before.
