very interesting indeed i am more of a silver collector personally but have decided to have a go at pennies starting with bun heads first and il see how i feel later on back to the 1893 penny itself though i have a numerous amount of them and realise theres the elusive 3/2 so i decided to take a photo of the dates and compare have attached a different looking one. what do you think? (this one is a penny this time )

wish id never started this penny mlarky i have an 1860 i have managed I.D,d as L.C.W (can only see the W now) below shield but my obverse seems different from an example recently sold on an internet auction site as you can see by the photo of the bust there is a decent sized gap between the bust and the teeth the example i have seen basically smothers some of the teeth any explanation or obverse id would be outstanding

i have an 1877 penny with what i would say is off 45 degree counter clockwise, is this a usual error for the bun head type coins?

good day to all have this penny with what seems to be an incomplete "1" in the date, i have been unable to find another example apart from a half penny dated the same year with pretty much exactly the same break it on the bay at the moment can post link if im allowed probably nothing to get exited about but thought i would ask as im new to pennies

Is the die axis inverted as normal for coins of this era? I ask because we can deduce the die was made with a square spiggot from the William III transposed errors, one of which has the date at 9 o'clock, but in that case the only arms in the correct position are the French ones.

Just an error Chris, a scarce error though. ahh an error, just looking, i made an error as well George I not II also the ssc is actually css No, that IS SSC - the initials stand for South Sea Company. sorry Peckris, what i meant is that the normal coin starts on the first quarter on SS or South Sea. The second quarter display,s a letter C for Company if you were to read my example from the date as a normal example, it,s then read C, then SS

well... il say it was less than £100 wasnt described as a french arms though and the obverse does have some really old scratches to the bust only but i suppose it is the reverse that is more important

Yeah, I never figured out why that is. The initials are after all of the South Seas Company, whose (Indonesian) silver was used to make the coins. But C SS it reads ... Nice find! thanks its a very interesting piece, me thinks that the inside of the coin was inscribed correct including what should be ss c but the outer lettering was 90 degrees off the mark

Morning all i havnt been here for a good while but im back!!!! i have aquired a George II 1723 shilling with the french arms at the date, instead of the Engish arms does anyone know the reason why this was done as i cannot find any information regarding this thanks all

its 9ct gold and made to look like a sovereign ring. this would have been sold as a george and the dragon coin ring back in the day. the disc would have a bezel to fit over and into the ring. now days they stamp these all in on piece disc and bezel with the lugs to fix them into place. nice piece really and would make a nice necklace or ring again

thanks rob all my decimal has been stored now, i decidied to wash ten in reverse osmosis water i use for my fish tank, (minerals have been removed) tell ya what they look nicer in these than the plastic capsules. all my main collection is silver and il be honest some of it im sh*te scared of even breathing next to in fear of damage. this is why i bought capsules for them. i have seen those quadrum capsules they look interesting but not cheap and the cases fo them are big and dont hold many coins, i might buy a few off ol andyjack later

just one other thing while we are on the coin flips, these are lighthouse branded and i am wondering now if i can store my proper collection in these holders. i do like to study at them quite a bit, even with having photos on my computer of them all, having it in the flesh is better. i currently hold all my collection in plastic capsules but after a few years they start to get scratched by the coin leaving marks, this doesnt do damge to the coin but is unsightly. whats the wear and tear like of one of these flips and also that plastic holding the coin doest it break down.

A wash in soap and water usually doesn't hurt, just tamp don't rub when drying i was thinking about that, i also have a marine fishtank and have to use special reverse osmosis water. this is mineral free. as these have only had a sniff of circulation i just want to remove anything that shouldnt be there the coins that have seen a bit more im not worried about.

hello everyone as probably most of us do on here is collect decimal change that interests us from circulation now i only keep one coin of each type that interests me anything else gets put back into circulation for someone else to seek, but have started to run out of space for these coins and have decided to put them into 2x2 flips as this is a cheap method for storing them. would i be ok to just ad these coins right into the flips or is there some type of preservation method that anyone would recommend, or not even. This would be long term storage so any thoughts taken on board. ive sorted out my trays, given the kids all the coppers and copper plate stuff in capsules and am left with everything 5p and up. minus my 2002 manchester games set all coins are pretty much ef or better. now to all the anti coin cleaners out there, your safe to keep your pickets and pitch forks down, tis all good, im not bringing the bleach and brillo pads out just yet although i dont agree myself with coin cleaning i wouldnt want to see these coins ruined in time due to something that could have just been easily removed before hand. what about one of those coin baths, anyone got one? now wheres that 800 grade sandpaper.......

It's either a late Edward I (Class 10C-10E) or an Edward II, really difficult to tell with this one, the face being worn, if it is an Edward II it's not Class 11, 12 unlikely as centre fleur looks more curved than wedgeshaped. Class 13 onwards more likely. Pictures in Coincraft really not very helpful for this. As my North catalogue is unavailable at present time I really cannot be more specfic than this, sorry! Difficult ones London and Canterbury as they were the main two mints and they minted most classes. cheers sylvester.much appreciated

That would be true on a coin struck entirely without collar, but in this case it has only been unrestrained on the side where the design has been partially struck which has caused a slip in the design in one direction which has in my opinion caused excessive metal flow in that direction. See my stunning artwork This is my opinion of why the lettering has taken thse shape it has, and it is also worth noting that the effect gets worse where the distance between lettering and edge of the planchet gets less. As for the portrait not a clue, could it be the same effect? Has the design slipped making it look unusual? i really liked red rileys comment with the operative induction training die that would have been cool but ive been sitting down and compared different coins of the same date and i am going on Colins theory. if you look at the good photos i uploaded you can see the metal has spread out at twelve and six o clock. this is where the most prominent fishtails are due to lack of metal where as 9 o clock on the coin has the least ammount of spread thus details can be seen as it pretty much should
